Show Nearly everybody has a nice disposition as long hs they have their own way. IS. mie men try to lift a load from their minds by lifting a load from a har. Il i presumed ihe committee on salaries of the legislature will not neglect its ditties, i 1 1 I Dowie's Zion is financially embarrassed, bank- j rupt. broke. The flying machine, if it comes into general I ue. will furnish an excellent opportunity for peo- !p!e to rise in the world. Put the fall might prove disastrous. The President has not pent a message to congress con-gress sinee our last issue. The Brownsville affair, therefore, remains the theme of much senatorial haranguing. As most men inherit their poliiical proclivities. President Jlooseveh's attitude on the "race sni-eide' sni-eide' question may ho contorted into a Kcpublio:in partisan movement. It would be a cruel blow to the hotel, restaurant and rooming houe proprietors for the legislature to put the lobbyists out of business. The session j might as well adjourn. 1 ! Kffi.rts are ia)ing for the preservation of the pre-historic relics within the tate. By all-mean.? ; thes relics should be preserved, while some of the I mure recent relics of barbnri-m it would be well I to forg.-t. I A young woman down in Indiana (somehow or j i.ther sueh ihings always occur in Indiana), has ! confessed to being the leader of a gang of horse ihieves. The point of interest is that the whole affair was a secret until she told it. At a recent meeting of the Salt Lake Bar Asso- ' eimion the jury system of trial in criminal oasea was criticised and a partial abolition advocated. Without the expense attached ti the jury, the attorney's at-torney's fees might easily be increased. :A An opportunity to become a midshipman in the I n i tod States navy will he afforded by competi- I five examinations, physical and mental, to he held j in the office of Stale Superintendent of Public Tn- nructiou A. The s.mall number of Democrats in the Utah legislature suggests that there is no danger of any fall because of its being divided against itself. Graft sensations in nearly all the big cities from coast to coast suggest that a company insuring insur-ing its policy holders against going to jail as a result re-sult of this widespread evil might find many eagor seekers for policies among political office holders. The United States postoffiec department has abandoned a number of rural free delivery routes throughout the country, on account of the impassable impass-able condition of the roads. It is a lucky circumstance circum-stance that Salt Lake's suburban deliveries are not. classed as rural. If you are hungry you doji't have to read the poison label on jour food before rating it, and fourteen ounces of hog fat and tallow as a substi- j lute for a pound of butter contains just two ounces less of adulterants and deleterious substances than j a pound would. Don't be pessimistic! j In their endeavor to save the country, congress- ; men draw V- a day, the high private in the army j 13 a month. Abscence from an army post for ten i days subjects the soldier to arrest for desertion, j but congressmen may absent themselves from the legislative balk indefinitely. Wo would rather be I a congressman. i a When two sueh organizations as the Iveal Instate j Association and the Manufacturers S: Merchants' j Association line up on opposite sides of a question like that of a railroad commission for the state, it is evident that the interests of the people and of the railroads should be. protected immediately by or from such a commission. Snow blockades on railroads throughout the northwest have not improved the condition of the already much overtaxed transportation facilities. The department of agriculture, through its weather bureau, ought to investigate this miserable miser-able state of affairs and vigorously prosecute Standard Oil or somebody responsible. i ' The Kural Xew-Yorker wonders why a plowing match Avould not draw as large a crowd as a horse race. The reasons are- simple plowing is pro duetive of good, racing of evil; plowing accomplishes accom-plishes something, racing is valueless; plowing is work, racing is sport. When it comes to sense vs. nonsense, the great American people are with the latter. The. chief of police of Cleveland. O., in hi.s annual an-nual report recommends that police reporters on the daily papers be given police powers, because of their ''peculiar training." and their ability to "mingle." Cleveland lawbreakers of all kind certainly cer-tainly may be hard put if the recommendation is adopted, and by the same token the reporters may be found with an honest penny in their pocket? and hard put for news. The United States department of agriculture wanted to find out how modern ten-year-old whisky is made, so sent a trio, presumably experts, on a tour of inspection ' of the distilleries of a number of states, including, of cour&e, Kentucky. We may now confidently look forward to another report which will be forthcoming on the scandalous scanda-lous methods of the distillers ah, no! the report will be tempered by numerous tests, and the distilleries dis-tilleries will he models of cleanliness and held up as examples for othar manufacturers of "food products." Howi' The statement of President James J. Hill of the Great Northern railroad concerning freight traffic conditions in the United States is probably as near the truth as any statement that can be had, as he is in a position to know what he is talking about. He says, among other things, that during the last ten years freight tonnage has increased 118 per cent, while the facilities for handling this business have increased but S5 per cent. We have never seen a letter argument put forth against the private pri-vate operation and control of railroads than this, nor a more convincing reason for government supervision. su-pervision. The government, with all its lack of buisness ability, certainly could not do much less efficient, work than this. |
