Show DARING YOUNG EDITOR. He is a pretty daring genius who edits the Church Progress of St. Louis. We may not understand under-stand the conditions by which he is environed, but sometimes we are disposed to fear he is terribly blunt. - The fact that he edits an official organ may. perhaps, accouut for his boldness. Sometimes, ami in some matters, and on some occasions, one can be startlingly frank with an Archbishop at his back. Jlere is an editorial clipped Irom. the current Church Progress: "To read Catholic literature is a duty of the Catholic laity. To foster a taste for such reading is a duty of the Catholic clergy. Where the latter fail the former become indifferent. Indifference to ; knowledge begets ignorance. And ignorance of our Faith leads to apostasy. Hence the importance of this question of Catholic literature." There is much truth 'in this, of course, yet is it not awfully bold? Evidently the eloquent young Archbishop1 of St. Louis wishes his people to read Catholic literature. Just as evidently the editor of Church Progress wishes them to do so. Still, are they doing so ? It would be interesting to learn. We have known instances in which Archbishops Arch-bishops earnestly recommended Catholic journals and to which priests urged their people, from the pulpit, to subscribe, and yet the people did not and" would not. The priest can do a great deal, but obviously he can't do it all. . The Angel Gabriel Wouldn't make some Catholics support Catholic literature if he struck them with his trumpet. -Catholic Sun. |
