Show Prayer. The world is full of people who talk I about their prayers, what they pray j I for. how many times they ask for cer- j ! tain things, and all the detail of their petitions. But how seldom do we hear ) of any one's praying for strength to resist temptation, or for a deeper spirit- ual life. By prayer half the world . seems to understand merely the asking ' for temporal blessing from God. We : pray for money, for health, for favors ! ; for ourselves and for our friends, but j for the greatest thing of all we do not j , seem to pray. Trayer is not alone peti- j i tion, it is also praise, adoration and j the worship of God; to place ourselves j j In the presence of God and to meditate j upon his immensity and our own un- j ! worthiness is the highest form of I ; prayer. Our most frequent and most j fervent prayer should be for grace to ! avoid falling into mortal sin. Mortal sin Is the greatest evil in the world; j j kills our souls and makes us into ani-I ani-I mals, and yet we seem indifferent to the wonderful remedy which God has placed at our disposal, prayer and sac- j raments. Some of us are foolish j enough to fancy that all our prayers i will be granted while we are spiritual- 1 ly dead. Let us first pray for a closer i union with God. for the strength to re- j main pure, and all the other things j will be added unto us. j |
