The illness of Marcus Mar-cus Daly in New York has greatly alarmed his friends and business associates asso-ciates here. An event of historical interest was the formal opening in Butte on Tuesday of the Montana State School of Mines. The school will start off with an attendance at-tendance of between forty and fifty pupils. pu-pils. Yesterday sixteen applicants for admission presented themselves for examination. ex-amination. The average age of the students stu-dents so far is 25, years. The examination examina-tion papers of some of the applicants were of a high degree of efficiency. None of the High School applicants have as yet applied, as they are not required to undergo an examination. Their diplomas entitle them to admission. admis-sion. . . . T- Coroner jullien 1s making an active canvass for renomination.' The following " dispatch from New-York New-York is belated relative to Mr. Daly's illness: "New York, Sept. 15. Marcus Daly, the millionaire copper mine owner own-er of Montana, is very seriously ill at the Holland hotel in this city. Mr. Daly arrived here on the Etruria one week ago and has been since in a condition con-dition of much suffering, occasioning anxiety to his friends and business associates. as-sociates. His ailment is heart trouble. trou-ble. He was reported somewhat stronger strong-er today." Mrs. M. J. Connell arrived in the city during the week and is visiting Mrs. F. E. Shaw. Mr. Connell is enjoying a hunting trip in the vicinity of 'Red Rock lake. Mayor McCarthy has called a special meeting of the city council for Monday night next, when measures will be devised de-vised to contribute suitably and expeditiously expe-ditiously to the sufferers at Galveston. The mayor has intended to take active steps in this matter before, but conditions condi-tions : have been such as to make a meeting of the council impossible. At the regular meeting on Wednesday next it is barely possible that a quorum will be present, because of the convention conven-tion at Helena, and the matter was so pressing that the mayor deemed it advisable ad-visable to call the special meeting. It is not known just what form the action for relief will take, but it will be definitely defi-nitely determined at the meeting. The Democratic convention Friday contributed over $500 for Galveston and that fund is in charge of Judge A. H. Barret, and will probably' be forwarded to Galveston, Tex., before the city council gets its relief fund organized. Daniel Lucey, who was eecuted for the murder of Patrick Regan, was buried bur-ied in the Catholic cemetery on Saturday. Satur-day. He was attended by a priest in his last days on earth and died a repentant. re-pentant. Miss Annie Sullivan, aged 37 years, died Tuesday. Deceased leaves two sisters and one brother in Butte and a mother and one brother in Ireland. Rev. Father Callahan left Monday va St. Paul for Illinois. Father Calla-I Calla-I han expects to be present Friday at the consecration of Right Rev. P. J. I O'Reilly as Assistant Bishop of Peoria, j 111. Friday following he will attend the silver jubilee pf Rev. Father Mar-sile, Mar-sile, who gave the French Mission in Butte during Lent. After the jubilee Father Callahan will go to West Baden Ba-den Springs to seek rest and quiet for about two weeks, when he will then return to Montana to begin anew the active labors of the past. Father Callahan's Calla-han's many friends wish him a safe and pleasant journey, a much needed rest and vacation, and a speedy return. re-turn. The Boys' and Girls' Sodalities of St. Patrick's Parish were reorganzed last Sunday, and a large number of new names enrolled. The officers for this year of the Boys' Sodality are: Prefect, Pre-fect, Louis Kane; Sub-Prefects, John Duggan, Frank Walker, Edward O'Flynn, William Mc-Govern, John Donnelly; Don-nelly; Treasurer, Fred McQueeney; Secretary. Michael Gavigan. Young Girls' Sodality: Prefect, Miss Nellie Driscoll; Sub-Prefects, Florence Lynch, Lizzie Lieneman, Mary Dris coll, Lizzie Ilerzog, Lulu Nieman, Josie Sullivan; Secretary, Mary Mac-Mahon; Mac-Mahon; Treasurer, Stella O'Donnell. In its present state of reorganization the Boys' Sodality numbers about seventy-six, seventy-six, and the Young Girls' Sodality about 150. Rev. Father Callahan is Spiritual Director for both the Boys' and Girls' Sodalities. A number of candidates are on probation, pending their admission and reception, which will take place on Dec. 8, 1900. There was also a reorganization of f the Acolychical Society of this parish, with an election of officers. Father Callahan is also Spiritual Director for this society. The infant son of Mayor and Mrs. J. T. McCarthy was baptized last week. The name given in baptism was Jeremiah. The sponsors were Miss Margaret McCarthy and Mr. Jeremiah Clifford. A noticeable feature in the baptism of the child was the father's name was Jeremiah, the godfather's name was also Jeremiah, and the child was christened , Jeremiah, and Rev. Jeremiah Callahan administered baptism. bap-tism. A meeting of the ladies of St. Patrick's Pat-rick's Parish was announced Sunday, to take place during the week to make-i make-i arrangements and plans and elect officers offi-cers to conduct a fair or bazaar in the near future, to defray the debt on the new rectory recently completed. The rorrtoter3 of the Sacred Heart League met last Sunday evening after vespers. Miss Gwennie Mueller entertained a number of her young friends at her home on South Washington street, last Tuesday evening. A delightful time was enjoyed by all. Mr. John Helehan of Divide was a visitor to the Smoky, City this week. |
