Brondel, bishop of Helena, today received the following from Bishop Gallagher of Texas: "Houston, Sept. 11 To Right Rev. John B. Brondel, Helena. Mont.: Galveston ruined by cyclone; 20,000 people peo-ple homeless; 1,000 dead. Churches, schools, hospitals and orphanages de stroyed. We appeal for immediate re- lief " , Bishop Brondel at once resolved to collect a fund for the relief of people of the storm-swept district. He himself him-self subscribed $200. and he has invited all persons, irrespective of church, to contribute to the fund which he will turn over to Bishop Gallagher. "I trust that the people of the state will respond liberally and at once, to this appeal for aid," said Bishop Brondel Bron-del this afternoon. "In such calamities as these the people should respond in no ordinary way. They should give as. they would have others give if they were the sufferers themselves. It is an awful calamity, and one that we cannot appreciate fully at this distance, but enough is known about it to insure in-sure them aid. it seems to me. of gen-I gen-I erous people of this state for their unfortunate un-fortunate brothers in Texas." |
