Show General Relief In 101 Cities Declines in April Telegraphic reports from 33 states and the District of Columbia Co-lumbia for 101 urban areas show a decrease of 6 percent in the cumber of cases receiving public general relief, and a decrease of 10 per cent in the amount of obligations ob-ligations incurred from March to April, according to figures made public by the Social Security Se-curity board today. Decreases in the number of cases were reported report-ed for more than three-fourths of the 101 cities, while increases, of as much as 1 pe? cent were reported re-ported for only 16 cities. Decreases De-creases of 10 per cent or more in the number of cases were reported re-ported for 42 cities, and of 20 percent "or more for 12 cities. Decreases of 1 per cent or more in the amount of obligations obliga-tions incurred for public general relief were reported for 87 of the 101 cities, while increases, ranging rang-ing from 1 to 17 per cent were reported from only 11 cities. The decreases in the amount of obligations ob-ligations incurred ranged from less than 1 per cent to as high as 70 per cent, with drops of 20 per cent or more in 28 cities, and as much as 10 per cent but less than 20 per cent in 34 other cities. Public general relief, is was explained, include all State and local relief in cash and in kind extended to the needy, except public assistance to the needy aged, needy blind, and dependent children under the Social Security Secur-ity act, other public assistance of these special types, and aid to veterans under state and local lo-cal statutes. It does not include in-clude expenditures from public funds for maternal and child health and welfare- services, costs of hospitalization, burials, institutional insti-tutional or board home care of children and adults, earnings under un-der the Works program, loans and subsistence grants made by the Farm Security administration, administra-tion, or Federal surplus commodities. commo-dities.
