Show Trees for Shelter Belts With increased interest in planting of trees, many farmers are planning to start shelter belts around their farmsteads. Only evergreen trees should be used for this purpose If best results are to be obtained. Little or no protection is afforded by deciduous trees which shed their leaves in the winter. Even when planted in extensive exten-sive blocks they do not break the wind. Douglas fir, western yellow pine, Austrian Aus-trian pine, Blue spruce or White spruce If given proper care will develop enough in five years to give some protection, pro-tection, and by ten or twelve years will give adequate protection.
