Show i NAUTICAL :- :- -: NOVELTIES The following "Nautical Novelties", are furnished by the U. S. Navy Re-cruiting Re-cruiting Statior at Salt Lake City: i Lieutenant Commander T. G. W. Settle, U. S. N., who won the International Interna-tional Balloon race last year, and who will pilot the navy's entry in the International In-ternational Balloon race this September, Septem-ber, is one of the few men in the world licensed to fly any kind of aircraft, air-craft, which includes gliders, airplanes, air-planes, airships and balloons. Whenever a vessel crosses the equator, equa-tor, those members of the crew, called "Shell Backs," who have previously been over the line, initiate the others, called "Polly-wogs," into the mysteries myster-ies of the deep. These initiations are often elaborate costumed affairs. Impressive Im-pressive looking certificates are presented pre-sented to those initiated by King Neptune Nep-tune and his retinue. For the past twelve years, Navy day has been observed on October 27th, Theodore Roosevelt's birthday anniversary, anni-versary, throughout the United States at which time all naval ships and stations sta-tions are "at home" to the public. Japan's navy day is May 28th, the anniversary an-niversary of the battle in the Japan sea during the Russo-Japanese war. England has a navy week for similar celebrations. Tide, which is the vertical rise and fall of the ocean level, is due to to the attraction of the moon and the sun upon the waters of the earth. Due to the fact that the sun is much farther far-ther than the moon from the earth, the sun has only about two-fifths of the amount of effect that the moon has on the tide. . Great Britain lacks fifty ships of having the naval strength permitted by the "5-5-3 treaty." Japan has seven vessels short. The United. States, at present, is 121 ships short of the, treaty quota and will still be 85 ships short when our present construction plan is completed. Since the Washington Washing-ton treaty in 1922, France has had the largest warship building program in the world.
