Show THE N K A IN' ACTION. Within the last few weeks the N'RA program has sped along with terrific force, over-riding everyone and every obat.-icli- that has confronted it. The results so far have been three up and thrc- down. Three important cod'-s have been dictated to industry steel, coal and oi! accompanied by threats of licensing unless the gov-fcrninent's gov-fcrninent's new dictates were obeyed. In the turmoil the NRA lost three of the many members of the "Brain Trust," Prof. William Ogburn being the most important of those resigning resign-ing over breaks in the ranks of the theorists. Ogburn claims the NRA is forging ahead too fast for the consumers' con-sumers' pockctbooks, and that a careful care-ful check on price rises in the interest inter-est of the consumer is all important to the success of the "New Deal." But these rifts have not caused the NRA to hesitate in its drive. An addition to the administration's constructive and destructive program is a "New Deal" for hogs, of which hundreds of thousands will be slaughtered slaugh-tered to make way for higher pork prices. But will the purpose be accomplished? ac-complished? We may later, if crops and produce fail next year, be drinking drink-ing cabbage tea and cannibalized into eating one another sandwiched between be-tween slices of black bread to get around high wheat prices, as it is reported re-ported the people of Soviet Russia are doing at this time as a result of their "New Deal." But we hope we will all still be here for the next election, nnyway. |
