Show Added Dignities for President Harding President hJlKDINU is expected ex-pected to take on airs upon is return to Washington because of 1 added dignities bestowed upon him in his travels. At Meacham, Ore., the President and Mrs. Harding were adopted Into the Cayuse tribe of Indians. The initiation was simple sim-ple and was followed by an Indian dance to the beatify- of tom-toms and the weird chanting of the squaws and the howling of the feather-bedecked bucks. The experience was hugely enjoyed en-joyed by the President and Mrs. Harding Hard-ing and no less by the Umatilla, Cayuse Cay-use and Walla Walla Indians who participated par-ticipated in the powwow and the dance. The Indians were garbed In all barbaric bar-baric splendor. Buckskin suits, trimmed with feathers, horsehair, beads, elk teeth, shells, ermine skins, and other frills made a colorful and picturesque sight. Poker Jim, a Walla Walla, aged seventy-six, talked and his words were Interpreted by Leo Sampson, Cayuse. Umapine, son of ihe noted old chief who was on the warpath in the '70s, was presented. Poker Jim gave the President a full hand of beaded gauntlets. gaunt-lets. W7onderful Pendleton blankets were presented to Mrs. Harding and Mrs. Work, wife of the secretaiy cf the Interior. Moreover, President Harding became be-came a member of the Keep Growing Wiser Order of Hoot Owls, with headquarters head-quarters in Portland, Ore. Grand Screech Charles F. Berg, -assisted by Hoot Owls George L. Baker and Walter Wal-ter Meacham, presented the President, and conferred upon him the degree of Grand Squawk of Washington, D. C. President Harding enjoys the distinction distinc-tion of being the first president of the United States to belong to the Hoot Owls. And, finally, at Skagway, Alaska, the President became a member of the Arctic brotherhood. In so doing he boiinu timself by oath never to mistreat mis-treat either a dog or a horse. Be kind to both of these animals, was easy to the President. The chief executive from boyhood has loved animals, and he was enthusiastic over the brotherhood's brother-hood's purpose to protect them. The brotherhood was organized in 1S99 on the steamer Seattle by gold prospectors, pros-pectors, whose use and love of horses and dogs in the north is said to have caused inclusion in the ritual of a clause requiring kindness to these animals. |
