Show Advises Saints To Avoid Debt Admonishing his hearers and the j members of the church to get out debt and stay out of debt and follow the instructions set out by the church authorities, thus enabling bettor and , happier prosperity, Dr. James Tal- j madge sounded the keynote for high- j er and better happines at his address i before the conventional conference j of the Gunnison Stake of Zion held j at the Gunnison Valley high school ' last Saturday and Sunday. j "The debt burden," said Dr. Tal-niadge, Tal-niadge, "is one of misery and should be unloaded as quickly as possible. All are not in debt, but many are carrying a burden that deprives real living, and freedom from financial obligations is sure to bring a contented content-ed home and mind." Dr. Talmadge, one of the principal speakers at the conference sessions, j fvvelt at some length on mutual improvement im-provement work and urged genu-1 iness, sincerity in all religious con-j victions. He praised the local offi-' cers in their successful achievement j in establishing the new Gunnison ! Stake of Zion and predicted great j reward for the results. The conventional conference is the! first to be held in this stake since j the organization a few months ago, and throughout all the meetings were ; highly successful. Besides Dr. Tal- j madge there were other prominent speakers from Salt Lake, among them being Mrs. May Booth Talmadge of i the Young Ladies Board of Mutual organizations; Clyde Cornwall of the Young Men's board; Charles D. Felt, of the general Sunday school board; j Eleanor Thomas of the Primary department; de-partment; Mrs. Richard R. Lyman of the Relief society board and Mrs. Alice Reynolds, also of the Relief society board, of Provo. In addition to the outside dignitaries, many of the local officers addressed the meetings. meet-ings. The sessions opened last S urday morning with a general meeting at the high school auditorium. All sessions ses-sions were well atended and Sunday afternoon's meeting was the largest, it being estimated that nearly 1000 were present. Several general sessions were held during the two-day oenference and following each of these special meetings meet-ings were held at which the officers and members attended to receive instructions in-structions for the coming fall and winter work. Throughout the meetings meet-ings were well attended and more than the usual enthusiasm was manifest mani-fest in the work. In addition to the congregational singing, Mrs. Emily Knighton and Bishop E. L. Swalberg rendered solos which added much to the spirit of the meetings. |
