Show Many Seniors May Qualify For Property Tax Exemptions Residents of Garfield County who are widows or widowers, disabled or 65 or older; and whose household income, including social security, for 1996 was less than $19,950, may qualify for a reduction in property taxes this year. The reduction is for a primary residence only, and must been owned since Jan. 1, 1997. They must also live in that home at least 10 months of this year and be a legal resident of Utah. Applications must be filed each year, even if residents filed ana qualified in previous years. This year's filing deadline is Sept. 1, 1997. All prior taxes must be paid to be eligible, but arrangements can be made to make payments by contacting the Garfield County Treasurer's Office. The taxes need to be paid in full by Sept. 30, 1997. Applications have been mailed to residents who have received them in previous years, or who have requested them recently. Additional forms may be obtained at the county treasurer's office at the Garfield County Courthouse in Panguitch and at all Senior Citizen's center in the county. Abatements or exemptions are also available if you are legally blind or a Veteran with a service-incurred service-incurred disability of at least 25 percent. Forms are being revised by the Utah State Tax Commission and should be mailed before July 1 and the filing deadline for those forms is also Sept. 1, 1997.
