Show Better Understanding (Editor's Note: In reporting the news story referred to in the following letter, the Garfield County News feels it treated the event In a responsible manner, disclosing the facts without sensationalism unlike other publications and television media in other areas of the state.) Editor: With respect to the most recent press reports in the local and state news media referring to the "vigilante attacks" on "local environmentalists". The Scenic 12 Chamber of Commerce, representing businesses and concerns along Utah Highway 12, was promoted, by this negative reflection of the area, to address these- misconceptions. We have been trying to promote the economic growth and stability of our communities, the demise of which is the true basis of the conflict. Nine percent of Garfield County is privately owned and therefore responsible for the main economy of the private sector. Unfortunately this small portion of nongovernment (USFS BLM) land cannot support and sustain the economic well being of the area without continuing multiple uses of these our public lands. There has been an ongoing and sincere conflict between so called "Environmentalists" whose desire is to suppress development and those local families and businesses who completely depend upon the use of the land. Keep in mind that this conflict is not proportional! The vast majority on one side are people whose very existence depend upon the land. Their needs far out-weight the vocal minority whose Interest is a narrow and one sided perspective of wilderness. We do not condone the destruction of private property and the restriction of personal liberties. As a Chamber of Commerce we are organized to preserve the free enterprise system of business by creating a better understanding and appreciation of the importance for wise development and a concern for its Inherent problems and to correct abuses which prevent the promotion of business, expansion, and community growth. Sincerely, FredL. Stout Chairman Scenic 12 Chamber of Commerce |
