Show Six Chosen to Girls State From Garfield Six juniors from three Garfield County high schools will attend Girls State as representatives of their schools. La Faun Barnhurst and Stephanie Roper will represent Panguitch High School; April Wayman and Pauline Fletcher will represent Bryce Valley High School and Sunia Spencer and Kathy Bayles will represent Escalante High School. Utah's first lady is one of several guest speakers scheduled to visit Cedar City for the June 3 through 9 Utah Girls State activities. Norma Matheson will represent her husband, Utah Governor Scott M. Matheson, in June 6 "State Day" programs. She will address the 400 Girls State participants at 1 p.m. in the Southern Utah State College Auditorium. "Girls State is being hosted here at SUSC for the 15th consecutive year. Since the week-long program is held between commencement and the beginning of summer school, we can devote the entire campus to Girls State needs," said Daphne Dalley, SUSC Coordinator of Conferences and Workshops. Other guest speakers are Alison Barlow, KSL television newscaster, and Colonel Jay Hess, a Vietnam veteran and "Prisoner of War" who will address Girl. Staters for the second consecutive year. "The public is invited to visit SUSC for Mrs. Matheson's June 6 address as well as for general 'City Day' and 'County Day' programs," Mrs. Dalley said. "City Day" is June 4, and "County Day" is June 5. Carolyn Washburn, Monroe, is serving as Girls State director. The exercise in legislative process s sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. Barbara Bickley, American Legion Auxiliary Department President, will of- ficially call Girls State activities to order. A quartet of officials elected at SUSC last June will direct the week-long activities. Gayle Groberg, Bountiful, is the Girls State governor. Kristy Berntson, Logan, is lieutenant governor, and Martha Palmer, Provo and Kirsten Carroll, Ogden, are Girls Nation senators. "During the week Girls State participants are on campus, they gain practical experience by organizing party conventions and enacting legislation," Mrs. Dalley said. "In addition, they elect city, county and state officials while studying the administrative, legislative and judicial structures of each level of government." |
