Show V Soil Erosion Battle Begins Near Tieaboo TICABOO A program of soil conservation has been instituted in this remote area of eastern Garfield County where Plateau Resources, actively mining in the district, and Canyonland Soil Conservation District have joined forces to combat soil erosion. The local Soil Conservation District Board has been concerned about potential soil erosion and mine reclamation in eastern Garfield County. When Pleateau Resources' Reclamation supervisor requested help from the Canyonlands Soil Conservation District because of their concern about preventing possible soil erosion from disturbed areas and tailing slopes in the mining area, the District lent assistance. The first challenge facing the conservationists was to find a type of vegetation which grow with only eight inches of annual moisture in sandy soil and still hold the soil in place. The Canyonlands Soil Conservation District requested and recevled 10 varieties of seed from the Soil Conservation Service Plant Materials Centers in Tucson, Arizona and Aberdeen, Idaho. On January 29, 1981, the 10 varieties were planted at four different locations in the Plateau Resources mining area. On May 20, these plots were visited by Guy Archibald, Plateau Resources, and Tom Jarman, Range conservationist, Soil Conservation Service, and Howrad Roper, District Conservationist, SCS. Information obtained revealed that the Volga Wild Rye and A208767 Alfalfa were showing good success and the Nespar Indian Ricegrass was showing fair Success. According to Range Conservationist Jarman, the Black Grama and Love Grss could be expected to be slower getting established but should show some success in later observations. Because of the efforts of the Canyonlands Soil Conservation District in obtaining the seed and carrying out the trial seedings, valid information is now available for seeding recom-mendcations in that. The District considers it a step forward in the overall conservation of soil resources initiated by the concern of a local group. |
