Show Little Leaguers Miss Tourney in Date Mix "We wuz robbed!" was the cry of Panguitch Senior League baseball All-Star team members, who, by what appears to be an unfortunate set of circumstances, were denied the opportunity to participate in a tournament play-off in Cedar City Monday night, The 13 to 15-year-old boys had practiced for the past several weeks for the tournament scheduled originally for July 29 through 31 in Cedar City. Five District One all-star teams were slated to challenge for the title, with the winner going to Clearfield to participate in the advance tournament. Klein Rollo, Cedar City, who serves as director of the Senior League in District One acknowledged his responsiblity for the flub that caused the whole thing. Rollo stated that he had marked Augsut 4 on his calendar as the starting date for the Clearfield Tournament as he thought he understood the information relayed to him early in the regular season. He had planned his play-off tournament in Cedar City for July 29 through 31 allowing enough time for the winning team to attend the advance tournament in Clearfield, he thought. On Saturday, July 25, he received a telephone call from the tournament planners in Clearfield requesting the name of his winning all-star team. Rollo replied that his teams would not be playing their tournament until the following Wednesday, July 29. Rollo was 'then told that the Clearfield Tournament would start on Tuesday, July 28 and that it was the Denver Regional tournament that would start August 4. Aware for the first time that he had scheduled his play-offs to take place too late in the month for the winning team to participate in the Clearfield tournament, he said he felt he had to try to schedule an immediate single-elimination tournament for Monday evening and try to get the winner to Clearfield in time to participate in the tournament. He arranged for a conference call to all teams involved but was unable, he said, to contact the Panguitch coach, Doug Mollet. He said four teams had their eligiblity affidavits and team photos submitted but that he did not have the documents for Panguitch. Mollet said Rollo told him they could bring their affidavits with them to the Cedar City touranment. July 28, Rollo finally got through to the Panguitch team and by that time the winning team members from Monday night's play-off were on their way to Clearfield. Panguitch team members prepared to store their fine new uniforms, purchased for them by Panguitch City, away until next Spring's "Play Ball!" sounds again. Panguitch team members are Stewart Marker, Jeff Veater, Kelly Morris, Raymond Roundy, Jeff Burton, Bret Christiansen, Duane Sawyer, Nathan Brinkerhoff, Jody Davis, Mark Owens, Kris Barney, Wayne Sawyer and Lawrence Orton. Panguitch Little League filed a formal complaint in behalf of the Senior League team when the group of younger players attended their tournament in Cedar City. |
