Show Residents Have Pits Access Bureau of Land Management, Kanab Resource Area has established a total of eight community pits in Garfield and Kane counties. Community pits are designated sites where the general public can purchase and remove small quantities of mineral materials for their personal use. One sand and gravel pit is located one mile north of Panguitch off Highway 89. Two sand and gravel pits and a topsoil pit are located a few miles south of Panguitch along the Panguitch Lake road. A rip rap pit is located off Highway 12 near Red Canyon. Two burnt shale pits are located in Sink Valley south of Alton. Another sand and gravel pit is located along the Shinarump Cliffs 15 miles east of Kanab and south of Highway 89. The prices of the materials are as follows: Sand and gravel, 25 cents per cubic yard; burnt shale, 25 cents per cubic yard; top soil, $1.50 per cubic yard; rip rap, 15 cents per cubic yard. Part of the money collected will be used to reclaim the sites when the material is exhausted. Additional community pits can be established where public demand is demonstrated for the materials listed or other materials such as clay or building stone. |
