Show Range Science Aids Multiple Use Program Range Science is the application of the biological and agricultural sciences to accomplish multiple use management on rangelands. These lands include grasslands, shrublands, mountain and alpine meadows, deserts and open forest. Sixty-three percent of the Continental United States is considered rangeland. The multiple use concept is one in which an effort is made to accommodate all of the possible land uses for which there is a need or demand This includes helpit: to improve grazing Nnds to meet the future demands for red meat. This is of great importance to many of the people in this area. Another objective is to increase the carrying capacity for big game through improved habitat. Range science is also involved with improving our watersheds to produce the quantity and quality of wr.ter to meet the increasing needs of livestock. wildlife, recreation, and irrigation. The fast growing recreational demands too, are keeping range managers busy trying to develop better facilities and programs Timber production can also be improved and made more compatible to other land uses through proper range management. Range science is becoming very important in the reclamation of mined lands helping to meet our energy needs ecologically and economically. Range science is still a fairly young, but growing and needed science which through its proper ap Dlication, can benefit all, improving the quality of life. Since the first GI Bill was signed into law in 1944. over 17 million veterans have taken some form of training under this popular program. i 1 |
