The brothers tried to turn the canoe upright but after several unsuccessful tries Don decided to swim to shore and Bill stayed with the craft. The icy water helped drain Don's strength rapidly and he was unable to reach the shore He sank beneath the water's surface about 40 yards from the canoe Micky Gay on shore saw Don was in trouble and swam out to assist him After swimming about 75 yards he realized he too was losing his strength and that it was too late to help Don so he turned around for shore. He said he knew he couldn't make it all the way so called for help Someone on shore waded out as far as possible and pulled him the rest of the way in. Help was summoned from the Lake View Resort where owners Dale Butler and friend Vern Robison boated into the water saving Bill Zabel. Micky Gay drove Bill, Don's wife and child to Panguitch where Mrs Zabel was hospitalized for shock.
