Show I Garfield Gets Nod For Sidewalk Project The Utah Transportation Commission has programmed $26,608 to construct pedestrian safety facilities at three locations in Garfield and Kane counties. On July 13, the UDOT's special Ad Hoc Sidewalk Committee endorsed UDOT recommendations on the use of the$1.5 million in Safe Sidewalk Funds appropriated by the Legislature last March. In Garfield County, curb, gutter and sidewalk will be constructed in Escalante from Main Street to 3rd East on the south side of U-12. In Henrieville, sidewalk will be installed on the north side of U-12 from 1st West to Main Street. In Kane County, a sidewalk will be Installed in Kanab at the junction of U-ll and US-89. The sidewalk will run easterly on the south side of the road. The Ad Hoc Sidewalk Committee, consisting of representatives from UDOT, the Department of Public Safety, the State PTA, the Legislature, the Utah Association of Counties, the Utah League of Cities, and the State Baord of Educaiton.w as formed to insure that all interested groups would have input into chooseing the pedestrian safety projects to be funded. General guidelines for distributing the funds were developed using a formula which included the number of pedestrian accidents, the general population and the number of school children in each county. Priorities within each county were then made using a number of factors, including projects started last year but not yet completed and the hazard index, which was developed by the UDOT Division of Safety. The index is based on the speed limit, volume of traffic, pedestrian data, proximity to schools, and the accident rate at each proposed project location. The money became available at the beginning of the fiscal year, July 1 The enthusiastic reponse by local officials resulted in many more requests for money than could be funded. In an effort to make the funds go as far as possible, local governmental units were encouraged to participate in the projects through financial contribution. |
