Show Volume XXIII Issue XI The Ogden Valley news Page 15 July 1, 2016 Flag Football Now in Ogden Valley: Players can register now! Now in its second year, Greg Gerritsen runs the Flag Football league in Ogden Valley. He states, “The kids who played last year had a really fun season. We had an NFL player come at the end of the season and put on a one-day camp for the kids. Last year was really rushed and we didn’t have many participants; however, this year we already have a lot of people signing up who are interested in playing.” The Ogden Valley league is for both boys and girls, ages 5 to 17. Gerritsen added, “We had some girls play last year, and they loved it. We want as many people to play as possible.” Sign-ups go from May 1 thru August 1, 2016. The season will begin August 18 and run every Thursday evening. Practices will be held 30 minutes before the game, and games will be 40 minutes long. Players and coaches can register online. The cost is $45 per player, which includes the NFL team jersey and the flags that each player will be issued. Local Riders Shine at Golden Spike Horse Trials The weekend of June Valley Rodeo Team Members Lasso Big Wins at State Finals Wasatch Front Jr. High Rodeo Team members Trinitie Lopshire and Gracie Stickler, who both will be 9th-grade students at Snowcrest Jr. High School this fall, earned the opportunity to compete at the Utah Jr. High School Rodeo Finals held in Heber City this spring—May 27 thru May 28. During their 8th-grade school year leading up to the finals, the girls competed in 14 rodeos—from Tremonton to the north and as far away as St. George to the south—earning enough points to qualify for this year’s state finals. During the finals, Gracie competed in Barrel Racing while Trinitie competed in two categories—both Team and Breakaway Roping. Out of over 100 contestants, Gracie finished 10th for the year in Barrel Racing while teammate Trinitie finished 8th in Team Roping and 14th in Breakaway. Commenting on the state finals, Gracie said the highlight of the event was taking 5th in the Barrels in the Short Go. Trinitie said, for her, it was taking 1st in Breakaway Roping in the Second Go with a 2.6 second run, and also taking 5th in team roping in the Short Go. The girls added that they are excited to high school rodeo next year for the Spiker’s High School Rodeo team. Trinitie is the daughter of Travis and April Lopshire of Liberty, Utah; Gracie is the daughter of Kirk and Jennifer Stickler of Huntsville. 18 thru June 19 dawned sunny and gorgeous, just in time for region English riders to convene at the nationally recognized 2016 Golden Spike Horse Trials. The horse trials have been held by Wasatch Pony Club since 1987. The club is a chapter of the national nonprofit youth equestrian organization, United Emma Welton from Eden on Liam. States Pony Club. The name “Pony” is derived from USPC’s British origins but riders from age 8 to 23 and horses and ponies of any size are included among its members. A horse trial, otherwise Rosie Smith of Nordic Valley on Seamus. known as a Combined Training Event, includes three disciplines: dressage (much like ice skating compulsories on the flat), show jumping (a short technical course over painted jumps), and galloping cross country over natural obstacles. It is an exhilarating sport to participate in and to watch. Ogden Valley riders were all in the ribbons. In Novice Division, Rosie Smith placed 3rd , Sydney Douglas on two separate horses, 6th and 8th, and Annie Mull 7th. In the Beginner Novice Division, Emma Welton took 1st, also winning the Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program for registered thoroughbred equine competitors.
