Read to win prizes, come to exciting events, and have fun with us this summer. Summertime reading means better grades. Studies show that seven out of ten children maintain and improve reading and writing skills by participating in a summer reading program. For more information, please call the library at 801-337-2660. Strokes of Genius – July 5, 10:30 a.m. Discover the joy of drawing. A story hour for ages 0-5 will be offered simultaneously with the activities at 10:30 a.m. Make It Pop! – July 18, 10:30 a.m. Experiment with different ways of adding color to your designs. A story hour will be offered simultaneously with the activities at 10:30. Piggie Tales - July 26, 10:30 a.m. Enjoy the fine are of puppetry with “Piggie Tales,” presented by the World of Puppetry Museum in Brigham City. Then use your own creativity to create a puppet of your won to take home. Teen Comic Drawings - Enter during June & July - Calling all teens. If you’re into creating graphic novels, video characters, or drawing in general, show off your work this summer at the library. Enter within any of the three categories listed below as many times as you want. All of the artwork will be put on display at the library from July 30 until September 1. There will be prizes for all who participate. Entry Types: • Comic panels. Draw at least a four panel comic strip. • Graphic novel. Draw one to two pages of your story. • Video game character. Design in detail a super hero for a video or computer game. What’s the Word? June 6 - July 31 Aspiring writers aged 12-18, submit your work throughout the summer to win prizes. One winner from each of the following categories will be chosen each week in June and July: Poetry, Fanfiction, Original Fiction, Memoir (What I Did on My Summer Vacation), Nonfiction (research). Summer Sizzle Concert Series: Randin Graves & the Digeridoo - Thursday, July 28, 7:00 p.m. Randin Graves, an award-winning film composer, has been making music since the early ‘90s. As a self-taught musician he went on to earn a B.A. cum laude in music composition from UCSD. This is where his passion for world music began, which led him to study the didgeridoo, on which he has become a world renowned expert. It will be held once again at Snowbasin Resort. The event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. at Earl’s Lodge. Come celebrate in the beauty of Snowbasin at this year’s Trail Mixer with a social and barbeque dinner at Earl’s Lodge. The event will feature live music by local artist John Burrows. Weber Pathways will hold a live and silent auction with well-known auctioneer Chris Zimmerman. Auction items will feature an array of travel and outdoor experience packages, along with many other great items! New this year will be the attendance of many of our local retailers who will display their latest offerings of products and service. Buy local; these are the retailers who support Weber Pathways! With your support, Weber Pathways will continue to extend and improve our wonderful system of trails in Weber County.All proceeds from this event will go towards planning, promoting, constructing, and protecting nonmotorized public pathways and related open space in Weber County. Tickets for the event are $70 per person and can be purchased online at <www.trailmixertickets.co> For more information, please call 801-393-2304 or email us at <outreach@ weberpathways.org> Eccles Community Art Center Announces Call for Entry for its 42nd Annual Statewide Competition The Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden, is announcing a call for entry for its 42nd Annual Statewide Competition. This statewide competition is open to all artists who presently reside in the state of Utah. Original work in any medium, including paintings, prints, monoprints, drawings, graphics, pottery, sculptures, and textiles are eligible. Reproduction prints and photography are not eligible. Works must have been completed within the past two years and not have been previously exhibited in a juried exhibit sponsored by the Eccles Community Art Center. Entries must be ready to hang, mounted, matted, and framed and otherwise ready for exhibition display. Please note that framed work must include wire or similar hanging system; works will not be accepted with only alligator hardware, D-ring, V-ring or keyhole hangers—under any circumstance. Artists are limited to a total of two entries. Entry fees are $10 per entry. Entry fees are used for prize money and publicity and are not refundable. Entries must be clearly identified by the artist with title, medium and price/ insurance value. Identification tags and result cards are provided to the artist at the time of entry. This is a juried competition only works accepted by the juror will be exhibited. The original works will be accepted Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday—July 19, 20 and 21—from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Eccles Community Art Center. Work will not be accepted after 6:00 p.m., July 21, 2016. A reception for artists, friends and the community will be held Friday, August 5 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Art Center. The awards will be posted at this reception. The competition exhibit will be on display August 5 thru August 29. Regular gallery hours are weekdays 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The gallery is closed Sundays and on major holidays. Also, join us August 19 thru August 20 for an Art In Bloom Competition Exhibit for floral and interior designers. An auction and reception will be held Thursday, August 18 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A $10 donation is requested at the door for the auction and reception.
