Dart was given a lifetime service and achievement award last week by the Duchesne County Soil Conservation District. The awards are presented to farmers and ranchers in recognition of their outstanding contributions and service to agriculture as well as to the local community. Ralph was a fanner from Day One. As a boy and young man he worked on his familys farm growing crops and tending sheep. One summer during the depression when he was just 14 years old, he and his older brother took care of their sheep herd in Steamboat Springs, Colorado area and trailed them home on foot in the fall taking 18 days. During those times he missed one year of high school to tend sheep. He attended Wasatch Academy and USU. He did much of the work on his fathers farm as well as starting his own farm when he and Velma were married. Ralph has a knowledge of the land and animals that few people attain. Many farmers have come to him asking for advice about planting and harvesting. Ralph haa always raised beautiful crops and has been very particular about when and how his crops were planted and the timing on irrigation and harvesting. He always stresses to Bruce to make sure you dont wash the top soil off when irrigating. He has raised many sheep and never tired of watching the baby lambs frolicking around. He also has always had cattle. Ralph has always been honest in his business dealings and haa always paid his bill on time, without debt. Ralph Jr. remembers selling hay and grain crops with him. He would always tell him to put an extra bale on the load or an extra bucket of grain in the sack to make sure the buyer always came out ahead. He has always kept his machinery in good condition, working on it in the winter so it would be ready for spring, summer and fall works. toti RM. A&r-- ' Junior'hd Children' Men's, Women's, crx ... Ralph spent many years custom combing grain crops, and he was in great demand. He had two combines that would operate from July through September each year and would cover the Roosevelt, Myton, Bridgeland, Duchesne,. Arcadia, Altamont and Ioka areas. He raised Alfalfa seed, and would buy seed from other farmers to sell to Porter Walton and later, Northrop King. He would take the seed to Salt Lake City in his 1948 dark purple International truck. He and his dad were also the first ones to bring hybrid corn to the Uintah Basin. Ralph has served on the following agencies: Director ofthe Uintah Farmers Co-o- p fin: several years and president for several more; Director Uintah Basin Credit Union and was presented a plaque for 30 years of service; three terms as committee member for Farm Home Administration; Director for Dry Gulch Irrigation for three years; Director fin Moon Lake Water Users for two years; and Director for Associated Water Users. Ralphs wife Velma, must not be left out of this scenario. She has been helping and supporting him all the way. They raised two daughters and three sons, all of whom appreciate their background in fanning and county living and especially the love and support they have always been given. Family togetherness is important to Ralph who likes to have all his family gather for birthdays and special occasions. i 722-358- 1 & ID) E..
