Show 7 UINTAH BASIN STANDARD. November 24. Utah fishermen should be grateful that when deforestation and set- tlement rendered many former Brook-troareas unfit for the ut the Brown Trout was here to takeover. The Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta) introduced from Europe in the 1880's, tolerates water several degrees warmer than the B rookie will, and has kept trout fishing alive in many streama and rivers now unsuited to the native B rookie, trout Two different strains ofthis species rivers will be filled with spawning trout following the strongest current. When the females find a suitable shallow gravely bottom they will dear away a spot with its tail and distribute its eggs. These areas are commonly referred to as a RED or nest. After the male fertilizes the eggs the female will stay and protect its nest from other predators including other males. Diversion dams and spillways built without fish ladders will stop the Browns (and all spawning fish) from moving upstream. Poor planning and lack of knowledge of fish will ruin a river above a spillway. The dam will also force the fish to A return Please the resource, .consider catch and release. were introduced to the United known from States, one Germany as the Von Behr or the Brown Trout Duchesne at San Juan, February or ofcourse the German Brown. The fish are very vulnerable at thia time and are decimated by fisherman that take advantage of the fish's inability to move farther upstream. While the Rainbow trout is a jumper, the Brown is a diver with just as many tricks to lose a hook as its colorful cousin. Big educated Browns are hard to land. They are strong and smart but practice makes perfect. Always keep flex in your rod working like a shock absorber and let that baby run (depending on the situation of course). Never point your rod at the fish and never never force (or horse) the fish to the net. Eqjoy it. Thats why youre there. With some river planning, and D.W.R. and land owner cooperation the Browns will be around for along time. Watch Out For The Reds; the Browns are Spawning By Bob Greumen 1998- - 4-- 6. 4-- 5; 500 razorback suckers get stocked in Green River State and federal biologists stocked 125 razorback suckers in a Green River Wetland near Vernal, Nov. 10, bringing the total number these fish released in the wild this fall to more than 500. Scientists estimate that about fish will 300 of these 10-- to survive and reach adulthood. Aside from the stocked fish, researchers believe only about 500 wild adult razorbacks remain in the entire Colorado Green River basin. The stocking was completed jointly by the Utah Division ofWild-lif- e Resources and US Fish and Wildlife Service. The Service raised the fish at the Ouray National Fish Hatchery. In an experiment to determine the best stocking strategy, the biologists placed nearly 400 of the fish in the Green River at Dinosaur National Monument upstream of an stretch of prime braided habitat. The reg maining fish were released in a wetland called the Stirrup,' about 20 miles south of Vernal. In 1997, the Fish and Wildlife Service removed part of a levee that had of 16-in- le low-lyin- separated this wetland from the river. During spring runoff water now will flow freely between the river and adjacent wetland, allowing the fish access to both types of habitat. Biologists hope the stocked razor-back- s will return to the river next spring and eventually reproduce. Stocking some fish directly in the river and others into an adjacent wetland will allow researchers to evaluate which method yields better survival, the scientists say. These fish historically used riverside wetland sites. They grow Caster in these areas, where the water is warmer and food is plentiful, Utah biologist Kevin Christopherson said. We hope to evaluate the fishes survival over the winter and see if they return to the river next spring when rising water reconnects the wetland to the river. All of the fish were implanted with electronically-code- d tags that will allow researchers to identify any fish that are later recaptured in the river. Both the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and the US Fish and Wildlife Service are partners in the Upper Colorado River Endangered Fish Recovery Program, a cooperative effort aimed at recovering the razorback sucker, Colorado squaw-fisbonytail and humpback chub while allowing for future water development for human purposes. h, 18-1- 9; 8-- 12-1- Teams win state titles Football is over, and the new Skyline; 4-champions are: San Dixie and Olympus; 5-- 2-- 3-- Juan.
