Union's girls will host Carbon, December 1. by Aldon Rachele three starters By Bob Gresemen I watched Uintahs quarterfinal win over Emery recently, and to be a nice guy I wore a red cap, shirt and the Uintah High School Booster Club jacket I was given by Ute fens in the In reality the big red U" stands for the University of Utah and not Uintah, but that doesnt matter because it was the right U as far as It is the they were concerned. wrong U as far as Union fens are concerned, and I dont dare wear my Uintah booster jacket in Roosevelt Finally, I was able to wear my red jacket without any boos, which brought Uintah good luck in their win over Emery. Now back to Swim. He went on to play football for Snow College and then became the starting quarterback for Kansas State in 1987. Back then there werent any internet sites. The only way to get info was from the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News when Kansas State played Top 20 teama auch as Nebraska, Colorado and Oklahoma, which usually creamed the Wildcats something like 50-1- 2 or 60-- 1 was able to report that Swim Threw for a TD or Two!" Finally, Garys morn asked me not to report anything sinde the outcomes were so lopsided. Now in 1998, Swim is probably beaming with pride that Kansas State edged to end 30 years of Nebraska, 40-3frustration and make up for his unwanted trips to the turf. The Duchesne High girls basketball team is looking forward to a last week Kansas State said, Uintah doesnt have much!" It turned out Uintah had more that much. They had a whole bunch. It never takes much effort for a Uintah Ute team to get geared up for Union. The same can be said for the Cougars. Uintah, with Swim in charge, battled Union all the way, and led moat of the game until the Cougars rallied to tie and win in overtime. A pass interference call went against the Utes late in the contest I'm a Union graduate, but that didn't matter as I got attacked machine-gun football style anyway. Cougar coach Marett said, I thought you said, 'Uintah didnt have muchT Chuck Henry, a former Uintah Ute wrestling coach and a (mat referee), has constantly reminded me of the controversial pass interference call. Lately no one has brought it up because Uintah has had good football success over the paat two years by winning three out of five playoff games and reaching the semi-fina- ls this year before losing to Cedar City. University was ranked No. 1 in one collegiate football poll, but it wasn't too long ago that the Wildcats were the No. 1 bad team. KSU is still the second-worteam with Northwestern just recently edging them out for die most losses of all time. I became aware of Kansas State when Gary Swim, a 1984 Uintah High School graduate, became the starting Wildcat quarterback in 1987. Swim's main claim to feme is s play that has made blooper tapes where he lined up under a guard instead of a center. The guard waved him back to the right guy. He began his career as the starting quarterback on a terrible Uintah team in 1983. Swim was the whole show. He simply backed up and rifled the ball down the field. A 1983 high school game that I will never forget took place in Roosevelt with Uintah squaring off against Union. Prior to the Big Game, Union Coach Lee Marett asked me fin some free scouting information on the Utea. I simply st es Duchesne High to play bail in Spring 1999 By Aldon Rachele timing. Union's Coach Hanke was focused during practice as the No. 1 item was basketball, basketball and more basketball. Hustle back, hustle back. Now catch, look and use all your skills. It's not one dribble and pass. Now, push, push, push. There's a layup, said Coach Hanke. He added, How many times do you worked hard on offense and then the other team gets an easy shot? You make 12 to 14 passes and 17-1- 9; 3-- A 25-2- successful year, and with three returning starters the chances look pretty good. Seniors Shanna Mullins, Amber Lewis and Shanna Green will hit the hardwood for head coach Clel Robinson and hope to equal or improve on last year's 2nd place finish in Region 13. We look pretty good so far, Coach Robinson said, but you never know how good you are until you play someone. Well find out Tues- mid-1980- s. As of sophomore. Coach Hanke put in fast break and early offenses in during practice last week, and he said, Early in the season we will have to rely on those two offenses. The set type of offense needs a lot of practice and a guy is open and you go 'Yeah' and then it's No'. They (your opponent) are going 'Oh, Yeah'. You got to control your emotions out there. It is no big deal to miBS a shot. You will miss some. We hope not too many. We just hope you don't have an emotional letdown." Union's schedule is as follows: Morgan at Union, December 2; Union at West High School, December 5; Bear River at Union, December 11; North Summit at Union, December 12; Union at Flaming Gorge Tournament in Green River, Wyoming, four games, December Union at Grantsville, December 22; Altamont at Union, January 9; Union at Moffat County, Craig, Colorado, January 12; Union at Park City, January 15; Union at Wasatch, January 20; Lehi at Union, January 22; Uintah at Union, January 29; Union at Emery, February 3; Park City at Union, February 5; Wasatch at Union, February 10; Union at Lehi, February 12; Union at Uintah, February 16; Inter-regio- n state playoff, February 20; State Meet, February day." This year's team will also have two juniors and a talented bunch of sophomores. This is the best shooting team in years, the coach added, the entire team can light it up. The coach thinks last year's state champ San Juan is still the team to beat in Region 13. They have a great team with most of their girls coming back, said Robinson, adding that Altamont will be tough as well. The Eagles play their neighbors on the Longhorns floor on Jan. 24 and on the Eagle floor Feb. 12, at 4, 5:30 and 7 p.m.. The Lady Eagles will have their 7. 0, ' hands full with their first game of the season against Carbon in Price on Tuesday Nov. 24. The Dinoa are a power in 3A and 1997 State Champa. The Board also okayed Altamont High Schools second year of playing both sports. The two schools will compete in class with the sports in the fellow Region 13 members, San Juan, Monti cello and Grand.
