Church Most authorities on the family agree that the modern family is under much pressure and has many problems Various solutions are suggested some very complex some simplistic Some view the future of the family as hopeful and others suggest that the family as we know it is becoming extinct and that it will be replaced by alternate social forms I will admit from the beginning that my view of the family is based on biblical presuppositions and principles As such I believe the family to be the primary institution of society for which there can be no and without which replacement there will eventually be no society Tbe Old Testament prophet Malachi prophesied "Behold I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord: And he shall turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to the fathers lest I smite the earth with a curse” (Malachi 4:56) From this passage it must be concluded that the lack of renewal and restoration of the family will result in a curse of judgment that predicated by deterioration of the family "The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair: and they took them sives of all which they chose" (Genesis 6:2) This verse suggests several conditions that were destructive to family life Unworthy partners First Godly people were marrying those who were ungodly This is the first step toward dissolving the foundations of the family spiritual compromise In the Old Testament the Hebrews were instructed not to marry outside their faith in the New Testament Christians are commanded "Do not be unequally yoked together believers with unbelievers” In our society today people tend to chose marriage partners on other than spiritual or scriptural guidelines Secondly we see suggested in this verse multiple marriages While polygamy affects only a small portion of our society as a society we are moving rapidly toward plural marriage through marriage divorce Our and remarriage and condemns outlaws society polygamy but our laas allow and promote multiple marriages in a serial form This eicourages instability in the family by promoting a lack of lasting commitment and encouraging people to divorce their problems rather than solve them And lastly we see the factor of selfish preference — men acting "as they impulsively selfishly choose" When the divine factor of God's will is ignored in forming a nuuaifce the siabiliiy ol Mini arraige is affected and when problems do occur they are much more difficult to resolve As a pastor I have noticed that most people wait until planning a wedding to seek the counsel of spiritual leaders by then most of the decisions are made and direction is set An appropriate prayer for some weddings like these is "God bless this mess" From a biblical perspective we need to radically reform the foundational element of the family marriage But we also need to reform several elements in existing family life As Malachi said "The hearts of the fathers must be turned toward their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers" This involves dealing with several factors that affect relationships between marriage partners and between parents and children Causes of problems There are so many areas of concern here it is impossible to list them much less discuss them Some of the notable causes of family problems are selfishness and materialism lark of commitment lack of communications lark of moral integrity and honesty sensuality and a lack of the principle characteristics of love patience forgiveness helpfulness and hope Our society is rapidly coming to a philosophy of "Every man for himself" This lends to promote and independence unwillingness to enter your soul and your strength and the second is like it you should love your neighbor as yourself” Unless men worship a just and holy God who has revealed himself as a God of love they will lose all basis for relationships love We have already redefined love so that it is more like lust and devoid of any commitment or sacrifice The biblical concept of love seeking the best for another at your expense looking after the interests of others in servitude and humility is the hope of mankind generally and healing for the family This will involve a change of hearts a change of direction away from general trends Without God's love and God's kind of love the family will fail and the earth will be struck by a curse For those who see the need for change and are willing to "turn and return" to the way of love there is great hope As the apostle Paul said "Love never failsnow abideth faith hope and love but the greatest of these is love" We can fail to love but we cannot love and fail into relationships involving sacrificial commitment Those who suffer most are the very young and the elderly The aborting of unwanted children and advocating of euthanasia witness to a desire in society to get rid of those who must depend on others to survive Those who advocate these things should pray that they do not get old and rejoice that their as parents were not as they are In total contradiction to the trend "every man for himself' are the teachings of Jesus Christ "The greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart your mind COMS self-center- They miss the fiestas Caiderones adjust to new life By Cliff Cahoon USU Information Services ' Though they say there have been some things that took getting used to both Guillermo and Rosario Calderone believe “you can enjoy any country in the world if you will adapt” Believing the way to live in a foreign country is to take part in the culture customs and food the Bolivia residents and two daughters have spent an educational six years in Logan In the beginning language required the biggest adaptation Guillermo who studies aeronautics at Utah State University and will graduate this spring did not speak any English He spent four quarters in USU’s Intensive English program before getting into the regular university curriculum Rosario had studied British English and admits to the adjustment to the American version was a little difficult at first The children Claudia and d Vlviana sho attend Edith Bowen School were young enough that English is probably their first language "We speak to them in Spanish and they understand it but I worry about them in school when we return home" says Rosario Papa Calderone doesn't worry about them at alL "Kids just talk" he says “They'll get it right away" The children have adapted to American food easily In fact their eight-year-ol- mother says they prefer it and often won’t even try the Bolivian meals she fixes Rosario is herself quite comfortable with American food because she learned to cook here "Like many middle class families in Bolivia we always had a cook I did not learn to cook until we moved here” die says She now has expanded her culinary prowess to include native dishes which she generally only fixes on weekends because they take a long time to prepare Ingredients are not really a problem in preparing Bolivian food because they are basically the same as those available here There are some spices that are hard to get but with nearly 40 other Bolivians living in Logan someone who has visited home will often bring back supplies for the others k Except for a recent trip by Rosario the Caiderones have not been home since moving to Utah The only food she returned with was coffee and aji a ground chile that even through its plastic bag smelled hot The coffee is stronger than its US counterpart and has a smooth flavor one-wee- While American food was not a shock one thing that surprised the Caiderones was the erase In any economy which allows a family to have a cook people do not fix things themselves Guillermo says he has now learned to do a lot of things for himself which he had never done It was custom rather than aptitude that kept him from repairing things Prior to coming to the US he spent eight years in the air force working on airplanes He made the decision to take more schooling in the states because he wasn't getting ahead fast enough To help support his family Guillermo has worked in various labor jobs during summers During the school year he devotes full time KING HAIR - We Cater to his study Rosario a secretary for six years in Bolivia takes advantage of
