Show Logan Utah Sunday Nov(-- i r 7 4 Logan -native named dean of law school CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Richard Va Kic hard A Morrill the Daniel Caplin Professor of Lam at the University of Virginia has been named dean of the University's School of law effective July 1 19fto The appointment was announced Oct 23 to the law school faculty by Dr David A Shannon university vice president and provost Shannon told the law faculty he was "delighted" Merrill had accepted the five-yeterm as law dean Merrill is a native of Logan the son of Mrs Milton R Merrill and the late Dr Merrill vice president of Utah State University ar it: A Morrill Merrill as the seventh dean of the law school will replace Emerson G Spies who has held the dcanship since 1976 Merrill 42 has has been a member of the law faculty since 1969 He went on leave of absence to serve as chief counsel for the US Food and Drug Administration in 1977 In 1977 he returned to the law school and was elected to the Caplin Professorship that year A Rhodes Scholar Merrill holds a law degree from of Columbia University where he was editor-in-chithe Columbia Law Review He earned 1 bachelor's ef degree magna rum laude at Columbia College and he hulds both a bachelor's and a master's drgrer from Oxford University He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa After reeeiiing his law degree in 1964 Merrill served as law clerk tu Judge Carl McGowan of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit Before joining the law school faculty Merrill was associated in private practice with the Washington lau firm Covington & burling he was visiting During the summer of 1973 professor of law at the University of Utah College of 1? hiKaiU Journal - ?
