Show Logan Utah Sunday Doctor Lamb On loss of appetite By Lawrence LambMD DEAR DR LAMB — For the last year I have not nad a proper appetite which makes it rather difficult to be interested in cooking proper meals for myself I ve been alone for eight years and some think this causes a loss of appetite My mother was this way in later years and I knew it must be miserable and now I really know it is I'm 65 and do not have to watch my weight Is it normal for people as they grow older to lose their appetite? Sometimes especially in the evenings I hate the thought of eating DEAR READER — I don't like to use the term normal but it certainly is frequent Many people who ByJoanHanauer UPITV Writer NEW YORK (UP1) — Once upon a time birth and marriage and aging and death all took place within the home Those milestones of life have increasingly become institutionalized in modern America — but not for some people That's the area covered in “Home" a documentary by John Reilly and Julie Gustafson that PBS will broadcast Nov 4 at 10 pm (check local listings) The program is broken up into four case studies with the most poignant concerning aging and death — perhaps because it is a land where we all will be forced to travel someday As somebody once said about aging — think of the alterative The show opens on a high note however — with the birth of a child assisted by a midwife in an maternity center For those who are squeamish about reality — the actual birth of the shot of the child is show including a head-oemerging baby The segment on marriage also is upbeat — a divorced mother of two boys marries a man she feels she really needs in an elaborate and formal ceremony that marks an emotional high point of their lives But the heart of the show lies with two old women One is widow who has been placed in a nursing home by her middle aged children A woman with a deep voice and granite jaw — no frail little powder puff lady despite her crippling hip injury — she obviously believes her life is over She yearns for the past when her husband was alive and her health was steady And she nurses her resentments — unexpressed and yet why does she mention that her son has room but not his enough in him home for his mother-in-lamother The final case study offers an axample of sacrifice that the viewer will admire — but not necessarily imitate It Is titled "Death of a Parent” and deals with a woman — again a widow — suffering terminal cancer She entered the hospital for diagnosis of what she expected would be a minor complaint But the news was bad the prognosis hopeless and her family never expected her to leave the hospital alive But the hospital suddenly warned it was releasing her in two days Her son — a bearded young nan thin to the point of emaciation — volunteered to live with her for her last weeks helped by other family members rather than place her in a nursing home “She has never turned her back on anybody in her life” her son said He talked about his childhood when he remembered a grandparent who had to be carried around and was always spitting into a handkerchief Those grandparents are still spitting into handkerchiefs but they are put somewhere because it's n w Itmmitlii Inn Ask Ann Landers in SLCmiIiI LAKE CITY The Hamada Inns of Phoenix under the eyes I've asked my doctor about this and all I get is it can be caused by a number of things He said it could be from an anemia but he didn't think that was my problem or it could be from fatigue I've heard for years that strong glasses dissipation or kidney trouble causes you to get pronounced bags under the eyes DEAR READER — You could fill a book on the number of things that people have claimed will happen to you if you dissipate Dissipation usually includes any activity that the person talking about it doesn't approve of You can get swelling around the eyes from an accumulation of fluid Fluid tends to accumulate wherever the skin and tissues are loose as they are around the eyes In this case fluid is apt to accumulate during the night and be particularly prominent in the morning There are a list of medical conditions that can contribute to the accumulation of flued This includes kidney disease and heart disease and any allergic problem that tends to block the normal drainage of fluids through the nose sinus and eye area A more common cause of bags underneath the eye is the enlargment of the normal fat pad underneath the lower eyelid We all have one and like all other fat pads they can be large or small Finally the skin stretches as one gets older and may sag This is a fairly common problem The surgical removal of excess skin and fat pads is relatively simple in the hands of a trained cosmetic surgeon (Newspaper Enterprise Assn) A!i ANN LANDERS A mu aiiou ft lu "Tungnc Tied in Appleton" Ueli-iii- l nu li wao good hui think that mother moiv help H ou
