Sure enongh the story described how an S30 million Western-themeamusement park and hotel would be built in Williams Ariz — about 60 miles south of Grand Canyon National Park near Interstate 40 The president of the development firm a guy named Robert Roth was quoted in the article: -We see this as elevating the status of our magnificent Grand Canyon from an international tourist attraction to an international tourist destination" Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that this developer is saying he's going to improve t he Grand Canyon with a theme park Taking on that task it seems to me reqiiires not just $80 million but also an awful lot of chutzpah to say the least — since the canyon has been around for more than a few million years and there are a lot of people vho think it's fine just the way it is And it raises at least one big question in my mind: flow long are we going to permit developers to improve upon nature with condos and theme parks and ski resorts and hotels and shopping centers? Until there is no nature left? Most likely I'm afraid If you think that's pessimistic take a good look at Vermont The question is particularly relevant when we're talking about the Grand Canyon because less than a year ago it was listed as one of the 10 most endangered national parks by the Wilderness Society a national conservation organization whose primary goal is proper management and preservation of federal lands And one of the threats to the Grand Canyon of course is simply the pressure that people put on the park Last year there were 311 mil c Z:1:17 TRAVEL Since 1977 Om Dbl VA 14 hotel nights Hotel Costa De Ora Tennis Sedior baily PUERTO VALLARTA $399 fare from Salt Lake our Roundtrip from I $4 34 hotel transfers taxes & - - If AIRLINES VII MORRIS from Si 1 1ILNN Afitt soak:20ff: 94 III ::r3 I -- 41 I your local YUGOSLOVIAN Specialist at SKYWAYS 1A4E1 'prices valid for daaarlwa fnm Jon la May 1989 tater doporturat sligbolv Call 18 Years MANNY NOWA LOS ANGELES $51 fom $149 March NEW YORIC foni $289 motel LONDON horn -- Olt - 1 ddk 0 4111 OIK'' : I 10' 1 7 - - IL A P' COMOrah R111111Prip 1 from I q from airfare plus 4 -- I from $669 TOKYO from $569" AZ:144441 from ''' y yAn joljNo or ao v no In ' 61 'IP d1 1' Ir' I ''r'Ie I' - $349tic $'0 for ono 01 Ihund trip air fore from SIC Air fore sublect to change Taxes not included The Best of Europe From plus theatre package st WI also offer loimst "torailposs" and hotel Iaccomotlatior in coniunction with bargain boseineitt fares throoglsoot Europe Lj tirA Ow ca0 WAN 237-200- -- of Mr vild Show March 2 at 730 pm Brool Thursday Gart Sporl Camle 5SSO S 900 F Snit hake City tiliati 11 '3399 - P Ia KIto tha (I ( slertfla i 006 VIA FT1M tin Anchorage nd cr One Flight Weekly $199 one way SLC-DE- Thur 10:30 pm Sun 5:00 pm Sat 11:55 pm Sat 7:00 am every every every every DEN-SLSLC-DEDEN-SL- Non Stop tor one way Thursday and Sunday Flights OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL Lao wob Europe From 5385 Alpine WIN nc luxembourg Switerland iechtenstein ustna and NI France ales (11r)FD TOURS TO: LDS CIiu ohm SAN FRANCISCO From rhe hest ot Pans and Switier!and each way based on round trip int lo Rmembor m lorrn !ode tit Ik I ur r4e Mr Foster a33i r111 in es innh i'nip sublect 3ititne II 'he n1333nten1 n Only Add S1000 for one way change nwet pnces Flights Non-Sto- p Sandy 572-442- 4 West Vallel 263-957- y 1 964-667- Bountiful 7 Downtown SLC 295-94- 521-061- 43 THANKS UTAH FOR YOUR SUPPORT RESERVATIONS 1 1 Main Office SIC Logan Brigham City Ogden Clearfield Park City Orem Provo and Spanish Fork Idaho Falls and Rexburg HAWAII CANCUN MAZATLAN CALIFORNIA ALASKA DENVER OFFICE HOURS: (Mew- Fri) (Saturday) (Moe- - (Smtarday) :'' AD rt 1 202 Spanish leek —794 90179 Brigki Ian iris am Orem —225 7153 Aelm— 82 1 Park City-9- 49Lops— 752-520- Spia 5460 1555 City-7- 34 Bo 006011-2- 95 Went Va limy-9- 2121 9443 4424 Sandy-5- 72 01177 04 9571 7777 0114ty —2413 Itembiarg-3- 54 23 ra14-59011 Idaho Murray ALL FLIGHTS VIA PORTS OF CALL AIR AND ARE SUBJECT TO TERMS OF THE OPERATORPARTICIPANT CONTRACT 1 Some Restnotons MORRIS - AkooV You 483-646- 4 - s Pri) Same 483-656- 5 OTHER UTAH TICKET OUTLETS Dogrotowe —521 0011 Prove-373- eams-Op- PHONE HOURS: T' 14 3 South Main laI Spe ort Add S505 plus ightseeing PLACE YOUR AD lb noght 111 111100401 $39eeach Cosmos London From S349 CARD Add 4111 shopping DEN VER PICK YOUR from fro RI oovoi 0 I Mmon Athae100 $3997 Fare Stand-b- y Economy Tours triki v ea I rom First Class Tours Scotland Ilvitleo Alo 'leo lax With 22 offices along the Wasatch Front HONG KONGTAIPEI Pri cottorne dIIg H11 tiottO s 1111 Globus Gateway Murray-Hollada- I 1101111IT 4 IY2r rr - - ' -- ountnt 11 I $699 ALASKA Intl 483-644- 1 $769 $589 in ft !r '1295 0 -top 1000001 " - about S1 Iowa t qt Los Angeles From $59 ra British Sampler From 3459 AdERICA and AMERiCAN WERITAGI TOUR July 17August 2 (Bus 3 Air) airnvra Sacred Grove Nauvoo Lbarty cdiand dle Cumorah Pageant S many Other 0s kistorIcal Sites Plus ra Washington 0 C Philadelphia & lots more 5 Warnretnech "mad II 145 Jo ty $639' Iosed 7 otiftd Night plus taI airfare Round-tn- ioH MIiitl '189 March - A r) Paris From WOMMION )d ' P Includet snow:nada steak dinner & tranteOrlation FiIinq last Seniors' geociel S199 400 S 5 FOR SNOWNOtalt E - ' - Secial $439 WINTER IN YELLOWSTONE MINNEAPOLIS ATHEttl '489 klatch CArlsbed Cavern Grand Canyon kOellto La ae Peeve' & leore1 Sortiors' FRANKFURT Experience SPECIAL GREAT SOUTHWEST TOUR WARM WEATHER 111 trr TRAVEL ZONE 325 So Main St Salt Lek City UT 84 ' ito 111irJ 4140 4 0110 " I 6)41 nftnr n Snorkling $349 Zurich From $638 airfare plus tax Introducing Princess Cruise Lines - Lem Y Mexican Riviera Cruise — $599 r SEMINAR!
