And how about the Quayle tree? Those genealogists must think we're pretty green Quay les don't grow on trees though this year one did grow on a Bush And you shouldn't ask a genealogist how that happened That question is for political scientists — another contradiction in terms I Bill Hall vikt fwgionommionamenumem n Lii One genealogist says Bush and Quayle are lOth cousins once removed and before the election was over Bush wished that was what he could do with Quayle And he probably would have if they hadn't been cousins For good measure the genealogists say Bush and Quayle are related to Abraham Lincoln and to the man who is "believed to be" Marilyn Monroe's father Apparently they put it that way because Marilyn's mom slept around a bit and it was merely the family's best guess that this one was Marilyn's dad But if the guy believed to 'I be Marilyn's father really is her father then the men believed to be George Bush and Dan Quayle are definitely related to the woman believed to be Marilyn Monroe But I gather there is no doubt that Bush and Quayle are related to the president believed to be Abraham Lincoln And the whole relationship with Lincoln may explain why Marilyn's mom was an emancipated woman But my question for the genealogists is what we are supposed to learn from knowing that Bush and Quayle are so distantly related to each other and to Lincoln and to Marilyn Monroe I can't see the point in this at all — unless Lincoln repeatedly refused to admit he was going to raise taxes and Monroe joined the National Guard to avoid going to Korea where she undoubtedly would have been greatly appreciated I scoff at these relationships because a 10th cousin isn't exactly a close relative A scientist some years ago estimated that no one on the face of the earth is more distant than the 50th cousin from anyone else on earth That gives you the range on how close a lOth cousin is If you start with Adam and Eve — either the biblical ones or the scientific version — and you keep dividing and subdividing the human race until you get to the present then some of us may be rather distant relatives but we are all relatives nonetheless cousin We are all related The person believed to be you is related to the person believed to be me — as well as to Bush and Quayle and Abe Lincoln and Marilyn Monroe and everyone else in the whole wide world If you go back far enough you find a common beginning that links by blood all Republicans to all Democrats all people all scumbags people to all to all saints You are related to anybody you hate So bear that in mind if you are inclined to be critical of Cousin George and Cousin Dan or even if these words trouble you Cousin Me I suppose there is something to be said for knowing where you come from for understanding your roots so that you might overcome family flaws and live by family strengths But those are dangerous waters filled with prophecies excuses for failure and vain pretensions that can lead you astray It matters far less where your family has been than where it is going through you After all most families are overrun with characters to rise above not relatives to boast about For every Lincoln in our background there is an army of Edsels So it matters little if your lOth cousin was Marilyn Monroe That doesn't make you an actress Work makes you an actress At least that is what people believed to be my parents used to say g Bill Hall is a columnist and editorial page writer for the Lewiston Morning Tribune Idaho a Salt Lake Tribune group newspaper I |
