The museum, the first for Green River, will tell the story of the river and the region which has been called Americas wildest. Green River Mayor Rey Lloyd Ilatt, who is also chairman of the museum board, said, We are trying to make it real first class, a nationally accredited museum good enough to pull tourists from We hope some of the tourists who stop can be funnelled to the museums in Price, Helper and Moab. The museum will have a strong story line with major focuses on the region, itself trappers and explorers, on open this summer John Wesley Powell, the first expedition leader to make it through, and early boats on the river. A paddlewheel steamship was once used to make the river crossing at Green River. Hatt said he has heard someone tried to traverse the length of the river with a steamship but didnt make it. The location of the museum on the river will make itpossibleforustohave some replicas of early boats tied up near the museum, the mayor said. Boat rides may be offered. Already there have been offers of display materials such as clothing won by members of Powells expeditions, but we have not accepted anything, the mayor said. We want to be able to determine authenticity and have a place to display things donated. We are getting profession- al help with our displays, and are corresponding with the Smithsonian Institution and National Geographic Society.
