S. Highway 6. The area is open for camping and starting on campground is picnicking Memorial Day weekend. The reached by taking the left fork atop a paved but steep and winding three miles access road from the highway. No reservations are necessary, but there is a $4 fee for overnight camping at the 18 sites available. Three picnic areas are on the right fork road. The lower area is the shadiest and will accommodate 50 people, the middle area is more open with room for 25, and the upper picnic site is the sunniest with facilities for 75. Group reservations may be made by calling the Bureau of Land Management in Price at (801) after May 1. The reservation fee is $20 per day for each picnic area for a 637-458- 4 group of 50 people. There are 40 picnic tables, including 10 double size tables in the group area. Toilets, running water, and garbage 352 N. MAIN MOAB collection are provided, and there are 32 fireplaces. Price Canyon Recreation Area overlooks scenic Crandall Canyon and a view of the top of the Book Cliffs. Canyon Rim Viewpoint is located midway along the Bristlecone Ridge Nature Trail, a mile hike that takes you up 660 feet from the campground. 1-- (801) 259-837- 1 Golfing Improvements Efforts have been made at Carbon Country Club, and more are coming. underway to protect historical sites Recognizing the value of historic sites for recre- Thompson Springs was an ational and educational use, the BLM Grand Resource Area office in Moab is currently involved in an interpretation and stabilization project that is providing insights into the area's early history. Northwest of Moab, for instance, are the remains of the Halfway Station that served the traveling public between Moab and the railroad at Thompson Springs from 1883 to 1904. The station provided a place to eat a meal, change horses and rest for a few hours or overnight. Stabilization and a new interpretive sign give visitors an opportunity to imagine the days when travel from Moab to eight hour journey (com- pared to a 30 minute drive today.) East of Moab along the banks of the Colorado River is another recently stabilized halfway house site the Hittle Bottom Homestead. Occupied by the Tom Kitsen family at the turn of the century, the site was used to change horse teams when Tom carried the mail from the Cisco Post Office to the Castleton Post Office. Both Cisco and Castleton qualify as Utah ghost towns today, but the once sleepy Hittle Bottom Homestead is now a popular recreation area for fishing, picnicking, camping and boating.
