Show 14 Recreation-Touris- The t Guide, May, 1989 uniqueness of 1,327,600 acre National ForStates United Departest, ment of Agriculture, located in Southeastern Utah, is one of 156 forests nationwide; one of 16 in the Intermountain Region. It is managed for multiple uses, such as range, timber, minerals, water, wildlife and recreation. The forest is divided into three separate land areas, the Manti Division, the LaSal Division at Moab and the LaSal Division at Monticello. The Manti Division Ranger District offices are located at Price, Ferron and Ephraim. The LaSal Division Ranger. District offices are located at Moab and Monticello. Recreation Opportunities Approximately one million recreation visitor days are spent on the forest annually in diverse opportunities. Recreation pursuits include fuel wood sightseeing, gathering, hunting, fishing, off-highw- vehicle riding, camping, boating, picnicking, and just relaxing in the forest environment. Winter activities include snowmobiling, skiing and some cross-countr- y down- Primitive hill skiing. recreation activities occur in the Dark Canyon Wilderness. The forest contains national two recreation trails; the Left Fork of Huntington Canyon Trail, 4 miles in length, and the Fist Creek Trail, 10 miles in length. Both trails are located on the Manti Division. Many other trails exist on both divisions, including a transmountain trail on the Moab Ranger District. Chevron The 45,000 acre Dark Canyon Wilderness is lo- cated on the Monticello Ranger District. It is located in the Colorado Plateau Canyon terrain and is characterized by deep sandstone canyons with vertical walls ranging from a few hundred to thousands of feet in height, in- terspersed with pinyon-ju-nipe- r benchland. High red rock canyons dwarf visitors with terraced castle-lik- e walls towering 3,000 feet above the canyon floors. Arches, springs, seeps and hanging gardens exist. Life zones range from ponderosa pine and aspen-covere- d high country to desert vegetation in the bottom of Dark Canyon. Wildlife species are diverse and include mule deer and cougar. The area ranks high in and scenic archaeological values. Developed recreation occurs at areas with facilities constructed especially for recreation. Developed public recreation sites on the forest include: 20 family type campgrounds, four family type picnic grounds, one winter sports site, one boating site, seven minor interpretive sites associated with an auto tour, four iso- lated minor interpretive sites, three recreation residence subdivisions com- PDOGE GCJGVDQM Chevron Gas & Oil Products prised of 34 total individual residences, and nine isolated recreation residences. It occurs mostly along or adjacent to roads, and includes activities such as driving for pleasure, camping, hiking or mechanized trail use, hunting, wilderness fishingand travel.
