Show Recreation-Touri- Area is tops for rock art By LAYNE MILLER Staff writer 800-150- 0 Hidden away in Utah are beautiful examples of rock art left by the prehistoric inhabitants of the canyons. They were hidden from view and therefore protected for hundreds of years, but now man has moved into the canyons with his motorcycles, and backpacks. The once hidden, written four-wheele- rs treasures are now becoming well known and are now being vandalized and in many cases totally destroyed. Most rock art panels in Biking Utah were created by the Anasazi or Fremont cultures, making them years old. Because of their antiquity not much is known about them. Rock art authorities believe the panels may have been sign posts giving directions, the retelling of myths and legends, and some may have been created to enhance special religious ceremonies. Recent investigations indicate that some were created to interreact with light and shadow either to indicate the seasons of the year or to highlight the ceremony or story being told. Moab to Moab could very well be the mountain biking capitalof the world. Hundreds of people converge on the area every weekend during the springand early summer, then again as soon as the intense heat is over in late summer. It has also become the destination point for serious mountain bikers all over the country. Slickrock The most famous mountain biking area in Moab, as well as in Utah and perhaps in the entire country, is A ing or purpose, man's creasing use of the canyon country is taking its toll on the panels. As we construct dams, highways and subdivisions we are slowly destroying them. Some of the most heavily impacted areas in Utah are in- Nine-Mil- e Canyonlands Canyon, National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Horseshoe Canyon and Lake Powell. As we spend time in Castle Country, we should keep in mind that these sites are not only in some of the most spectacular country in the West but they are located on ground that was considered sacred by the Native Americans. As you visit the sites keep this in mind so you will have the same respect for them that you have for the beautiful works of art displayed in your local church. Guide, May, st 19893 note about this guide . . . We live in the center of one of the most diverse geological areas in the world. Books have been written on small segments of the area. For that reason we have no illusions that this guide is comprehensive in any manner, nor is it intended to be. Each year things change improvements are made to recreation areas, new programs are added and regulations change. It is our main intent to bring you up to speed on what is happening in our area in order to help you make decisions about your recreation time this summer. We have also included some suggestions that might make your vacations and weekends a little easier and more fun, from tips on photography to how to pack for a mountain bike trip. Another element of this guide is an attempt to point out some places that are "off the beaten path." Many of us travel the highways for years without noticing places of interest. We have pointed out a few of them. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did.
