Show Recreation-Touris- Guide, May, 1989 t Beat the heat at Scofield State Park State Park is the Madsen Bay unit. The Madsen Bay campground has 100 primitive sites, and a group use area with a covered pavilion containing picnic tables and grills. Madsen Bay is a great area for the family. There is a great deal of open space for children to play in, and a small stream flows right through the park. The Madsen Bay park area has easy shoreline access with good fishing right from the park. Scofield Reservoir has earned a reputation as one of Utah's premier family fisheries. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources stocks 600,000 fingerling rainbow trout in the reservoir each year. During the summer the trout average a phenomenal growth rate of one inch per month. Whether fishing from boat or shore, the bottom line is that Scofield Reservoir has one of the highest catch rates in Utah. There are no fishing licenses available at Scofield, so come prepared and be ready to catch fish. Nestled high on the northern end of the Wasatch Plateau, Scofield State Park is a great mountain retreat. Visitors who wish to sight see can follow the paved road to Huntington Canyon, enjoying truly extraordinary mountain scenery all the way. More adventurous visitors can take some of the Scofield By TIM SMITH Utah State Park ranger When summer arrives, and the thermometer rises, it is time to beat the heat and escape to the mountains. One of the best mountain escapes is Scofield State Park. At 7,600 feet, Scofield has the highest elevation of any Utah State Park. Scofield State Park is located in Carbon and Utah counties is central Utah. To reach the park, turn west off Utah State Route 6 and travel 13 miles on State Route 96. Scofield State Park has two developed park areas. Both are on the shoreline of Scofield Reservoir, one of Utahs most renowned trout fisheries. The most devel- oped park area is the View unit. Mountain Mountain View has a campground, with each site containing a picnic table and grill. Mountain View also contains a boat ramp, boat docks, a sanitary dump station, a modern restroom with hot showers, and a fish cleaning station for the fish you are bound to catch. An outstanding feature of the Mountain View campground is, as the name suggests, the outstanding view of the mountains and reservoir that each campsite affords. The other park area at 34-un- , it dirt roads that lead into the backcountry of the plateau. For those who like to hike, there are many streams in the area that provide not only hiking, but in some cases fine fishing. The park is located amidst some of Utahs most productive coal fields. The town of Scofield is a picturesque mining town. Though only about 50 people live in Scofield now, in the 1920s Scofield boasted a pop snow thaws and the ice breaks up on the reservoir. This usually occurs in late March or April depending on the weather.
