Eons ago, the earth's crust burst open and molten magma bubbled out, forming a huge dome of rock, ringed with upthrust sandstone anticlines. Over the centuries, the dome eroded into a maze of canyons, mesas and magma dikes, and today it offers explo- u rations with which none can compare. The Swell once was home to the Fremont culture and remains of their rock art can be found throughout the region. It was also home to old precious-meta- l miners who dug out ore and eventually left behind the mines and shacks near them. this region Through rode the infamous Wild Bunch, led by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Tbey even hid out on the remote mesa known today as Sids Mountain. Even today, few roads go through this vast area, but those few offer recreationists the opportunity to explore the Swell and discover all that it has to offer. Site work, the first phase of the new building, has been completed. There will be four phases in the project. Bids for the second phase will be called for in about four months, said Jon Judd, chairman of the museum board and acting director. The new museum of natural history will become the home of dinosaurs, various animals from the Pleistocene Age and archaeological exhibits.
