Show The Salt Lake Tribune BUSINESS Sunday, May28, 1995 Fax Machine Doubles as Laser Printer, Scanner The cost of a plain paper fax machinecanstill be a bit pricey (most are $1,500 to $3,000) for small office/homeoffice (SOHO) environments. However, most of the people who use SOHOs have resigned themselves to investing in computers and laser printers, since the laser still reigns supreme when it comes to making professional printouts at a reasonable speed. Because there’s a laser printer at the heart of most plain-paper fax machines, it stands to reason that someone would come out with a fax device that wouldlet you use the laser’s output. Someone has. The Lumina Series 2000 offers that, plus a few other capabilities, for about $600. The Lumina 2000 lookslike an ordinary fax machine with a documentfeeder. It also sports a twoline display, a telephone keypad and several other fax and multifunction buttons. That's where the similarity ends. Unlike a fax machine, the Lumina 2000 doesn’t hold any paper. This makes it smaller and COMPUTERS lighter (four pounds) than plain- paper and most thermal fax machines. The Lumina 2000 easily hooks up between the computer and a laser or inkjet printer. Plug a phone line into it, and you're ready to fax. Unlike a fax modem, the computer doesn’t need to be turned on to send or receive faxes. The Lumina 2000 acts as a stand-alone, send-and-receive, plain-paper fax machine. Its Windows software lets you control and send files, such as CRAIG CROSSMAN contain color. The Lumina 2000 can also be used to scan in documents that can be edited in a word processor (this requires additional Optical Character Recognition software) or archivedforlater retrieval Finally, it can be used as a copier that lets you enlarge, reduce andcollate. The Lumina 2000 comesin two models. The 2096is the entry-level version, with a maximum 9,600 bps speed. documents created in a wordprocessor, directly to the Lumina 2000. Acting as an external fax/modem, the computer can also directly use the Lumina 2000 to sendbinary files. This allows you to send andreceivedata files that contain information that could not ordinarily be sent via a fax machine, such as documents that The Model 2144features a 14.4 bps modem. Upgradeoptions for either modelinclude a telephone handset and additional internal memory to capture faxes in case the printer runs out of paper. The additional memory also lets you scan in multiple pages at one time and then broadcast them to differentlocations without having to F7 scan them over again @ LuminaOffice Products (800. 586-4620 or (408) 992-1090 Oo Whybuy just a surge suppressor when you can get one with a built-in remote control?
