How’s this for a turnaround? Fifteen years ago, the NFL went to war with Al Davis in an effort to keep the Raiders from moving to Los Angeles. The NFL lost. And now, with the Ramsoffto St. Louis, the NFL is all but begging Davis to stay in Los Angeles. Pretty funny. The NFL didn’t want to go to court with the Rams andallowed them to leave once they threw a little more money into the league’s bank account. But with Davis once again talking about leaving L.A. — relocation back to Oakland has the league edgy about no team in the second-biggest market — the NFL has come up with incentives for Davis to stay put. The Rams departure gave Davis enviable leverage. If Davis can cut a deal with officials of Hollywood Parkto build a new football stadium — right next to the Great Western Forum and the racetrack — the NFL will have the right to put a second team in thereto replace the Rams. It will happen by either moving a hardship franchise or by awarding an expansion team. And the amazingthing is a proposedstadium will be in the same complex as a card casino, which has the league extremely nervous. In return, the new Hollywood Park stadium, which would open in 1997, will receive two Super Bowls between 2000-2005 and the Raiderswill get 10,000 tickets to each gametosell as partof their luxury box/premium seating package. They would be end zone seats, still a very valued commodity. The revenue from the tickets goes to the league, but their availability is a nice perk to entice bigmoney season-ticketsales. “This is not to keep Al Davis there, it’s to keep a team there, preferably two teams there,” Cleveland owner Art Modellsaid. “He’s got a chanceto stay there and this makesit possible to stay there. He went down there, forced his way into the marketplace and wants an improved facility and league support.” Modell testified twice on the league's behalf in the Raiders case. Hesaid thefinaltab, including lawyers’ fees from the case, was $70 million. Each of the other 27 teamspaid up with moneytaken outof television contract fees. Thecasino issue is very sticky. The NFLis petrified about gambling influences. So far, it's only card casinos, but the league does not want to be in the position of bringing 70,000 fans to a football game and have them wanderoverto play cards. If that were the case, “we would be quasi-partners with a gambling casino,” Marasaid, Butpartof the Hollywood Park deal must be that the casino is closed four hours before games. During games. And closed the first four hours after games. That eased some of the owners’ concerns aboutthe casino. oO AROUND THE LEAGUE The Dallas defense, which has finished No, 1 two of the last three years, could be decimated after this season. The Cowboys haveonly three defensivestarters under contract past this season Their free agents will include DE Charles Haley, DTs Leon Lett and Russell Maryland and DBs Darren Woodson and Kevin Smith and Larry Brown. We will learn much aboutthe Jets season in the first week. They open the Rich Kotite Era in Miami. If the Jets can win down there, they might get some early momentum with their next two games at home against Indianapolis and Jacksonville. The Jets have a real easy schedule, Their only games against ‘94 playoff teams: Two apiece vs, Miami and New England. . The Giants, Faleons and Vikings are the only teams that must face the Boys and Niners. The Giants open with Dallas at home on a Monday %it and play at SF the fifth week. So how come so many promising young U.S. drivers are opting notfor the Indy-car ranks, but for Winston Cup racing? The reasonscited vary, but the bottom line is that while the two races will dominate America’s sports landscape today, the drivers give the events decidedly differentflavors. Theracethat’s consideredto be an American icon will in fact be contested by mostly foreigners. And the Coca-Cola 600, seen for decades as an event run almost entirely by drivers from the Southeastern United States, will instead showcase several drivers who hadthe chance to makea career in Indy-car racing but decided againstit. RED DOG 300 ChadLittle held off Jeff Green in a tense duel over the closing laps to win the Red Dog 300 NASCAR Busch Grand National race Saturday at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway. MONACO GRANDPRIX DamonHill gained thepole position for the Monaco Grand Prix in Saturday's qualifying in Monte Carlo. Hill averaged 90.859 mph for the 2.068-mile circuit. Tempero Avoids Crash, Wins Suntana Indy Title SPRINGVILLE — Bill Tempero, the American Indy Car Series defending champion, claimed Saturday night's main event at Suntana Raceway. Tempero, from Fort Collins, Colo., collected $6,000 for the win in the 12-carfield, with nine cars finishing the race. He was followed by Curtis Spicer, Bill Hansen, Salt Lake native Jay Hansen and Don Johnson, Spicer also drives for Tempero's racing team. They all managed to avoid damage from a five-car crash in lap 32 the 60-lap race that knocked Don Colemanand Scott Busby out of the competition, The drivers were uninjured. Tempero also won thefirst series race of 1995, in Willow Springs, Calif. Jay Hansen, now living in Fairfax, Calif,, was third in that race, 1 In this game,a winis a win. One narrow nostril is as final and financially rewarding as 10 lengths. Finally, reality struck. The final pick of was P King Connectionin the ninth race. Sent off at depressingly low odds of 65, the favorite fell victim to a slightly tardy break from the starting gate and a race-longtrip along the rail, where the footing was deep andgetting worse as the rainy afternoon progressed. P King Connection never threatened, eventually fading to fifth. He was badly defeated by Beat The Latch, a horse he had beaten handily last summer. Aninexactscience? No doubt. But that’s dealing with horses. Remember, they are not machines. Their performances will vary from dayto day. Itis the bettors’ job to figure out which horse will run best on a specific day and underspecific circumstances. Today, four horses seem to provide a decent betting opportunity. WYOMING DOWNS RESULTS Tueeyear’ 2340 5a 4° ‘Attendance — yas Handle — $94,912 ATTENTION: SAFETY, FACILITY AND MAINTENANCE MANAGERS $65 In the secondrace,I'll put $5 to win, place and show onfirst-time starter Bowsand Bullions. It can be risky betting on a horse without any previous experience, but Bows and Bullionsis an exceptionally well-bred horse who enters his career debut with some strong workouts. In thefifth race, I'll bet $10 to win and place on Toll Tracer. Thoughthis horsewill break from the No.1 post, wherethe footing mightstill be a disadvantage, Toll Tracer ran competitively against much tougher opposition last summerat Los Alamitos. In the Grade II Kindergarten Futurity, Toll Tracer ran on even terms with The Fling King, who eventually qualified for the AllAmerican Futurity. If Toll Tracer runs back to last year’s form,he should handle his rivals in today’s Gary Waite Derby trial. Finally, let’s try $5 to win, place and show on Ce Dasher in the sixth race and Power Pacerin the ninth race.
