Dixie Hopes for Long Stay at JC Baseball Tournament Hakeem Olajuwon, perennial All-Star center of the Houston Rockets, will almost certainly represent the United States in the 1996 Olympics, according to Sunday’s Houston Chronicle. The Chronicle quoted unidentified NBA and international sources as saying an agreement with FIBA, international basketball’s governing body, is ‘98 percent done.” Olajuwon would not comment, but he said recently he would jumpat the chance. “Tt would be a great honor,” he said. ‘Can you imagine, putting on the USAjersey, No. 34?” His appearance on the team would culminate months of behind-the-scenes work by Olajuwon, his representatives, NBAexecutives and others. Thesourcessaid the announcement, which could come as soon as June, would make Olajuwon a shoo-in to be the starting center on the 12-man U.S, team competing in the Olympics in Atlanta. “They have heard the appeal,” one source said. ‘Wordis that it will be OK if [Olajuwon] is presented as a memberof the team.” SOCCER Play starts today in the LatinAmerican Futbol-Soccer League at Salt Lake's Riverside Park, 700 N. 1400 West. Dixie reached the World Series with two wins over Arizona West ernlast week Cale Shepherd (.415) and Brad Parker (.403) swing the most potent bats for the Rebels. Only two other Utah schools have competed in the World Series: Southern Utah in the 1260s the early rounds. A lack of quality starting pitching hurt Dixie then, but could be a strength this time. The Rebels have two capable hurlers to begin the double-elimination tournament in Jeff Garff and Lance Lambert. Garff has allowed opposing hitters a miserly .185 average and Lambert a .233 average. Lambert (12) and Garff (nine), have accounted for 21 of the Rebels’ 39 wins. GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The last time the Dixie Rebels played in baseball's Junior Coilege World Series, they made a quickexit. This time, the Rebels hope to stick around longer.
