Draw, draw, draw, By Tamera Smith Deseret News staff wnter To be a successful artist, one must WOODS CROSS draw, draw, draw," advises John Kenneth Allein, an art and history teacher at Woods Cross High School. Allein speaks from experience. He is an accomplished artist and sculptor who started the first high school sculpture class in Utah at Viewmont High School. He is continually working on commissioned paintings and does sculptures which are bronzed and sold in gallenes. Allein's career actually began when he was in junior high school. He enrolkl in a University of Utah course m sculpture, receiving a B grade. "I should have got an A, he believes. I guess they didnt think they could give a junior high kid an A for a college class." He later studied with artist Avard Fairbanks. He graduated with an art degree from the U. of U., studied law for one year, then started his own business setting art aside. I didnt think you could earn a living as an artist, Allein said. But every night, when he came home from work, he would paint to relax. Finally, 15 years later he decided to set the business aside to return to his art work. Most of Alleins work has a western theme. His feeling for art germinated outdoors, he said. Seeing the storm clouds moving in over the mountains; watching the stars at night . . . Most of his ideas come out of his head; he uses models infrequently. Allein said he does his thinking with pencil in hand. Im always drawing something, he said. Allan usually works on his paintings and sculptures at night after work. I paint or sculpt depending on the mood Im m," he said. Sculpture is a lot easier than painting because it is three dimensional, AUem said. I like sculpture. I like to teach kids. As long as you re around them, you stay young. ATTENTION HUNIERS: "Sorry We Do Not Process Wild Game " BACK PROBLEM? CANT SLEEP? Then he moved into a house with a foundry in the back yard. He began working in sculpture again, having a Mexican who operated the foundary cast his work in bronze. When he returned to the United States, Allein began teaching, continuing his sculpting and painting, too. I decided to market my work locally," he said. r WATERBEDS advises artist-teach-er P.S.
