Show tin'-- ' ; ?- 1 - Clinton mayor unopposed, 4 vie for council posts CLINTON Four City Council candidates will be listed on the Clinton ballot Nov. 8, but there will be only one choice for mayor. Incumbent Mayor Gary V. Bush, 2393 N. 770 W is the only unopposed candidate in Davis County and, barring a massive write-i- n campaign, he should be back for a term as second four-yea- r mayor. Rodney F. Vaterlaus, 3223 W. 18th North, a teacher, is the only incumbent seeking reclection to the council. Other council candidates are Delbert Francom, 1146 W. 13th North; Dennis Simon-se2314 N. 840 West; and Bruce L. Niederhausen, 1538 W. 1590 North. I think the biggest challenge facing the city is to n, control growth, Vaterlaus said. I think we must be sure that the city is able to provide services to the citizenry. A second problem which must be dealt with, according to the councilman, is storm water run-of- f. He said his past experience on the council would give him needed expertise in dealing with the problem. I have been on the council for four years now and I think my experience could be very beneficial to the city, Vaterlaus said. The councilman said, if reelected, he would like to work at attracting commercial development to the city to broaden the tax base. I have worked closely with the fire department, and would like to see it he continue to improve, said. I would also like to see it grow. Vaterlaus said the city must also be conscious of the need for schools and should work to keep school officials appraised of the citys growth. Delbert Francom, also a teacher, is making his second bid for a council seat. He has been the city Planning Commission chairman for the past five years. I dont have any axes to grind, I just feel like an obligated citizen, he said in reference to his decision to seek elective office. Id like to try and be of service to my community. Francom said his service on the planning commission has made him aware of the problems facing the city and he would like to use that experience to help make decisions concerning the citys future. Francom said he is concerned about communications between ciizens and the council and would like to improve public participation. For this type of government, all citizens should be involved, and I would like to try and make that happen, he said. I think we should tell the citizens what we are trying to do before we do it and not afterwards. Francom said he would also like to see better adult recreation programs de- veloped and continued efforts to control growth at acceptable levels. Dennis Simonsen is involved in electronics at Hill Air Force Base and is making his first election attempt for public office. He has not been involved in previous political positions, but has served as president of the Lions Club. I decided to run because I believe there are a lot of things which need to be done, he said. There were two council seats open and I felt I was as qualified as anyone else. Simonsen said he believes storm drainage is one of the citys biggest problems and would like to work toward solutions. He said he also favors controlled growth in the city at a pace which allows proper provision of o000000.0000 0000 0000 00 00000000000000000000000 o o DUERDEN'S o o o o o o o o o Its our 20th birthday and were celebrating.
