Show Bountiful firm is busy printing cities' ballots lbO.Out) ballots will be printed at the company. Reprinting the ballots, either because of a mistake by the company or the city, is common. Murrays ballots came off the press with two slots for write-i- n candidates instead of the one required by law, Carr said. They were reprinted. In West Jordan, a candidate withdrew, and the ballots were reprinted. In another city, a candidate was certified for the mayors position and it was later determined it should have been for council. Those ballots were also redone. While the candiBOUNTIFUL dates are out campaigning (or the upcoming municipal elections, a Bountiful printing firm is carrying out the meticulous task of getting all those candidates names properly placed on the ballot. Carr Printing Co. prints ballots for all but three of the cities in Utah. Salt Lake City, Provo and Ogden go to other sources. The firm, founded in 1890, started an election supply service in 1902. Carr Printing Co. is now considered the authority on election requirements in the state. Vernon Carr, a grandson of the founder, oversees the election end of the business and spends most of his time between now and the elections answering questions from cities all over the state. Most city officials call Carr with election questions, rather than the attorney general or their own attorneys, because he can usually give them an immediate answer over the phone. Between now and the election about Carr Printing Co. has never missed an election deadline, but has worked around the clock some years because of changes in the ballots forced by court decisions. In addition to ballots, Carr Printing more than 100 different election forms, including tally books, instructions, poll books, filing papers, petitions and tabulation forms. This year several cities have certified the same candidate in two different parties. The law is unclear whether the candidate would receive the total number of votes he receives on each ticket or whether he is wily entitled to the votes he receives under one ticket. Carr says he asked the attorney general to investigate that Vernon Carr, who oversees the election end of Carr Printing Co. business, checks ballots as they come off the presses. one. The Bountiful High School program is most like a program developed by the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory in Portland, Ore. Work experience prog- rams in the past have primarily dealt with students who had a job and wanted time out from school to work, Mrs. Jensen said. The traditional high school curriculum has never given students the opportunity to experience jobs before making decisions about what they wanted to pursue as a lifes work, she said. Going out on that job is a lot different than telling about it, Mrs. Jensen said. The work experiences won.t be limited to vocational activities but will include professions such as doctors, lawyers and teachers, Mrs. Jensen said. Students will also be given some service duties, such as care for the elderly or work in city government areas, to learn more about them- selves and other work areas consthey might not have idered, she said. She added that it is hoped the program will also give students some understandwork, ing of the dignity of is. it of what regardless Mrs. Jensen said the proand gram is not for drop-out- s that students will be selected by application.
