Many of them are unwanted. They often had parents who didn't care and parents who themselves had emotional problems. Some have been shuffled between three or more foster homes. They are girls who, for one reason or anothei are unable to stay in their own homes." Mrs. Bjorklund stresses that they are not "bad" girls; they merely haven't learned to cope with their situations. "Often they were never taught a value system or self discipline," she said. "They teamed to run away instead of trying to cope with problems." The village tries to help the girls rebuild their lives as responsible, -.Iir;sductive young people. In the home, they work together with their peers to solve problems and learn to handle freedom and responsibilities. "We believe in good, parenting," M rs. Bjorklund said. "Here, we give the girls assignments and responsibilities. We're finding that young people want to have guidelines and rules." The residential group living facility is structured like any home environment, she said. The girls, who usually live in the '1 ,..... 3 , ., ' House parents Steve and Connie Hunter and their two young children live in a separate apartment at the village to provide help and support for the girls. Program director Norman Gibbons, social worker Barbara Snow, a recreational therapist and a counselor-teache- r also work with the girls at the village. "We have to help them learn Many times they simply need opportunities to succeed." And she feels strongly that with a little help and encouragement these girls can experience great changes in their lives. The village operates on a very positive approach. Through such programs as Girl of the Month and Junior Leadership, the girls receive favorable recognition for their accomplishments. They are further awarded at an awards banquet, this year sponsored by Xerox facility could better be described as a home living center where the girls learn to live successfully within a positive family unit." The treatment program is a team concept, she noted. It involves the girl and her parents. "We see the family unit as the basic ingredient of the well being of these young girls. One of our primary goals is to strengthen family relationships and eventually return the girls to their own families or to appropriate foster care when necessary." In addition to teaching the girls responsibility and strengthening family relations, the center also tries to a rebuild shattered problem common to many of the girls at the village. "All these girls come in with poor RETAILFR sports? li ty, xillage for six months, are required to help with household chores, attend public school, spend a certain amount of time studying and participate in individual, group and family counseling. Their daily routine is a careful balance of work, study and recreation. The facility is designed like a typical home to further simulate a family living experience. It has a living room, dining area, family room, library, kitchen, counseling center and four bedrooms. r V , Various people from the community come in to talk with the girls about budgeting, homemaking, cultural and personal living skills. All the girls have taken part-tim- e employment. "The girls mastered their lessons in personal finance so well they were able to take a trip to Disneyland with money saved from their summer jobs," Mrs. Bjorklund noted. Mrs. Bjorklund believes the village's approach is a successful one. "It's a challenge to try to change behavior and personality patterns that have taken years to form," she said.
