Show Spotlight focuses on the obscure offensive linemen By Jerry Johnston too bad that no ones found a way to give recogni- Its tion to football linemen offensive linemen espe- cially. Several years ago the defensive front line of teams moved a bit into the spotlight with names like The Fearsome Foursome or the Steel Curtain, but the offensive lineman seems destined to play out his career as an unknown. 1 jets see if we can change some of that. In Davis County there are several good tackles, guards, and centers that deserve a little ink. 1 think if youve got a good offensive line youve got a good football team, says Coach Frank Thompson of Davis. Last year I think ve won state because we had a good line. Davis, running a double wing, needs a lot of muscle in the center to bolster things, and the line has really come through for the No. One ranked Darts. Center Richard Love doubled as a defensive player, but has done so well snapping the ball that hes been moved to offense. Rick Ray and Brett Shaw anchor the Darts at guard. Both are the key to offense, since it is the guard that has to pull on wide plays and block well on dives. Both are small, but make up for it with determination. Davis sports two fine tackles in Gary Parkin and Thor Angle. Big and sturdy, the tackles have the key block in the Davis line as the Darts tend to run right at the tackle position. Layton is another Davis County squad famous for a front line. The tough-minde- d Lancers use the airways quite a bit, and pass blocking is one of the keys to their attack. At Clearfield, Coach Brent Hancock also puts a lot of emphasis on pass blocking. Even to the point where size will be sacrificed for mobility and agility in the front line. Center Scott Carter is a fresh face in the Falcon front. With little experience, Scotts come on to be one of the most improved on the team. Guard Mike Muir is a hardnosed pass blocker who is known for his hard hits. When the Falcons run a trap, Tony Smith, 61 , and Scott Kinnear, 70, both of Bountiful, battle to keep two Layton Lancers, Steve Beckman, 70, and Dwayne Stark, 60, from tackling their quarterback, Chris Davies, 14. they use Mike for the key shot at the defender. Left guard Roger Baily is a senior, as are all of the Clearfield front liners, and is known for his sturdy pass blocking. Tackles Curtis Kawaguchi and Bryce Chapman are both 200 pounders with quickness. Curtis is especially fast and is used to lead the sweeps that Clearfield runs wide. "The line is as important as any position on the team, John Flint will tell you. "As far as were concerned at Clearfield, the war is won up there in the trenches. The line doesnt get the recognition that the others get, but you cant have a winner without a good line. And what makes a player want to play line? The ones Ive talked to n comenjoy the bat. Where the backs and ends are spending their time trying to avoid the opposition, the lineman goes head to head with the enemy. Youve got to be a confident, durable, determined sort to play up front and come away live. And they are the ones that deserve much more applause than they ever receive. man-to-ma- STORAGE TIME SPECIALS f mil rAOBATC 1 PLANT SPECIAL WANDERING JEW $369 6" hanging plant Se our large selection of house plonts.
