Cougar Harrier Heads to NCAA Doug Padilla goes to Madison, Wise, Monday as BYU's lone entry in this year's NCAA cross - country championships. 135 - pound For Padilla, a in his first year of running sophomore for the Cougars, it's quite a shock. "1 remember," Padilla said, "that right after finished high school I nobody really wanted me to run for and weighed only them. I was small, 127 pounds. I had run a 4:20 mile and e and I finished poorly at 9:15 the state meet at 13th in the mile." As a result, Padilla attended Chabot Junior College in Hayward, Calif., not far away from his hometown of San Leandro. Padilla ran for Chabot for one year before transfering to BYU. Then he served an LDS mission for two years to El Salvador. At Chabot, he ran a 4:10:7 mile a time good enough to make him the JC mile champion of 6 two-mil- Northern California. Padilla came home from his mission in March 1978. He trained hard to make BYU's team as a walk-o- n before arriving on campus last August. "I ran between 60 and 70 miles a week to get myself in shape to run y for BYU," Padilla said. "I have always wanted to run here." Padilla said that both making the BYU team and doing as well as he has were quite a shock. "I had tried out before when I was here for a semester in 1975," the said, "but didn't make the team." "I was really surprised," he said, as well as I did at last week's NCAA qualification meet at Weber State's course (he finished 12th) because our team ran only three races this season at 10,000 meters before last week." cross-countr- C IVI I Padilla's time of 31:14 at the NCAA Regionals was his best ever at the distance. His time placed him among the top four individuals who weren't affiliated with the top three schools. BYU finished fourth as a team, so the Cougars didn't qualify as a team; but Padilla was BYU's top runner. He finished as the second best American in the meet, because 10 of the first 12 were foreigners. Padilla also talked about Monday's NCAA Finals and his future here at 6V2-mi- Oregon and Villanova. Padilla said he plans on running both y and track for BYU until he graduates with a degree in electrical engineering. "I think d enjoy running the mile most," Padilla said, "but BYU has a lot of good milers right f now." Padilla added that he may run the 5,000- - or 10,000-metraces and maybe even the steeplechase. "On Monday," he said, "I'll try to get out to the front of the pack early and stay there. I don't like to lose contact with the leaders in a cross - country race," Padilla commented, "because you can get stuck in the middle of the pack." However, Padilla said, there are runners like Monday's odds-o- n favorite, Washington State's Henry Rono, who like to wait and make a later move. "I remember one race Rono won last year," Padilla said, "where he was dead last with over half the race completed. He still won it." Padilla said he doesn't know a lot about Madison, the course, or the competition. "All I know," Padilla said, "is that it'll be cold. That may mean running with extra clothes on."
