GOP sheriff candidate Kenneth killed a special ballot proposition Tuesday that would have banned beer sales in all but the town of Monticello. The question, to allow beer sales only in incorporated communities, would have left nearly the entire mile county dry including several marinas on the east side of Lake Powell, one of the most popular recreation sites in southeastern Utah. The proposition was killed by a 2 margin. While the county is the largest in Utah, is has a population of only about 10,000 persons. The county's only incorporated towns are Monticello and Blanding, and Blanding is already a dry community. Businessmen opposed the beer ban, fearing it would hurt tourism on Lake Powell. Social workers on Utah's portion of the Navajo Indian reservation supported it, hoping to alleviate an alcoholism problem among tribal members. But, instead, its statewide candidate didn't pull enough votes to even get a spot on the ballot for the Libertarians in the next general elections. George Mercier needed at least 2 percent of the total vote cast in the U.S. Senate race Tuesday for his party to be listed on the next election ballot. But Mercier ran an almost invisible fourth in the four-ma- n race headed by incumbent Sen. Orrin Hatch, not exposed to any fallout.
