Utah. 3. 1982 - Page 3 Nielson Takes LandslideVote to Washington By PAT CHRISTIAN Herald Staff Writer His aides pulled Third Congressional District candidate Howard Nielson from an election night party with an exuberant crowd of supporters to a small room for a call. On the other end was Democratic opponent Hank Huish personally conceding defeat. The opponents talked cordially for a few moments. For both of them the busy campaign was over. Nielson then rejoined the throng of supporters and gave his winning announcement to loud cheers : "It's great to be chosen as the first congressman to represent this district, Nielson told supporters. "Throughout this campaign Hank Huish has remained a gentlemam," Nielson said, and added he planned to "use Huish's expertise" in negotiating solutions to unemployment problems at U.S. Steel Geneva that his campaign was under financed with his $50,000 pitted against Nielson's $100,-00- Works and Kennecott. Nielson supporters at the Holiday Inn in Provo were excited from the begining, and they had a right to be. Their candidate was ahead from the start. As the night ended Nielson had won 77 percent of the votes the largest GOP victory in the Beehive State. With 100 percent of the new district's votes counted, Nielson won 106,267 to Huish's 32,295 votes. But Nielson said he wasn't 0. Before proclaiming victory, Nielson said in a private press conference in a small motel room that victory was a bit But he said his work was not over. Today is a critical day for he and many of his staff, as interviews with campaign workers begin to see which ones will join his new staff. His closest calls came earlier in the convention and in a biiter primary against fellow Republican Ray Beckham. Huish had been articulate in several of the debates, but he suffered from the stigma of his failing to meet a filing deadline and being forced to register as an Independent. Only one judicial position was contested, that of Judge Joseph Ira Dimick's seat in the Eighth Circuit Court. The county gave 30,558 votes to Dimick, with 64.42 percent over his challenger Attorney Ralph C. Amott, who gained 16,880 votes or 9.27 percent "no" vote. Judge David Sam received 89.8 percent "yes" vote to 10.2 percent "no." County voters also gave overwhelming affirmation to all three Utah Supreme Court justices. Justice Christine M. Durham, first woman appointed to the high court, received 43,111 "yes" votes to 4,971 "no" for aan 89.66 peracent margin. Justice Durham and Justice Dallin H. Oaks faced their first election, having been appointed to the bench by Governor Scott M. Matheson. Oaks received 50,503 "yes" votes in Utah County to 3,038 "no" votes for a 94.33 percent margin. Justice Richard C. Howe won a 91.01 percent margin, with 42,014 vot in favor and 4,151 votes agaL jt him. Max Byrnes Photo Gunnison Woman Killed Crossing Street A old Gunnison woman was killed and her son received minor injuries in Orem Tuesday evening when they were struck by a car as they were attempting to cross the street. Marguerite Louis Naylor died at the scene and old son Roger L. Naylor received bumps her and bruises when they were bit by a car. A police report identifies the driver as Rodrick James Yates, 19, of 50-ye- Couple Unharmed In Freak Mishap On Freeway 1- Lehi. An Orem Police spokesman said the car was traveling east on 1300 South at about 200 East when the accident occurred. The spokesman said the pedestrians were wearing dark clothes and there were no street lights in the area. A Pleasant Grove couple barely escaped injury in what one officer said would have been a fatal, freak in Salt Lake City accident on drill bit smashed when a two-fothrough the windshield and dashboard of their car and came to rest between the pair on the car's front lf seat.
