With about 200,000 candidates, vying for 56,000 posts on the local, not state and federal levels including the presidency of retired opporgeneral Joao Figueiredo tunities for conflict abound. The violence has been most frequent in the arid, interior regions bandits where Robin Hood-styl- e have become popular heroes. "Despite notions to the contrary, Brazilians have historically been rather bloodthirsty," veteran Communist Party militant Luis Carlos Prestes, 84, told United Press International. "This campaign does not differ that much from previous ones." In the northeastern state of a gunman in a pickup truck fired on an opposition candidate for governor, Marcos Freire, his wife and other candidates in a bus. No one was hurt. In Maranhao state, bullets hit a small plane that was taking off with government party senate candidate Joao Castelo. A shootout at a rally in the small town of Antenor Navarro, Paraiba state, reportedly killed a watchman and wounded 12 other people. In the most serious incident, the youngest member of the Brazil Congress, Heitor Alencar Furtado, "26, was killed in southern Parana state by a rifle shot to the heart as he snoozed in his car during a campaign rest stop. The admitted killer, a. plainclothes policeman, called the slaying an accident. By one count Furtado was the fifth candidate killed since serious campaigning began in August. The other fatalities were aspirants to lower offices, including two town council candidates in Ibipiranga in Pernambuco state. In the frontier states of Ama-zona- s and Goias, the opposition charged assassination plots were being hatched against their gubernatorial candidates who are currently favored to win. One municipality in the state of Sergipe has asked for federal troops to guarantee security on election day. Until 10 years ago federal troops routinely went to most of the states of the north and northeast on such occasions, officials said. Because of budget cutbacks, this year they will be sent only on , request. Half the estimated 20 campaign killings took place in the poor northeastern states. Others died in the central state of Minas Gerais and the western frontier states of Goias and Mato Grosso. No campaign death has yet been registered in Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, the two most densely populated states. There the fireworks have been mostly verbal, with candidates enlisting dancing girls and samba music to attract crowds to rallies and motorcades.
