Utahns Retain GOP Legislature By MICHAEL WHITNEY SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) -- Utaji Voters elected another, veto-proRepublican Legislature in Tuesday's election, giving the GO- P- for the second election in a row more than a majority in both the Senate and House. two-thir- The GOP adding to its strength in the State Senate, picking up two seats, for a majority of 24 to five. It held its own in the State House, where the party breakdown remains 58 Republicans and 17 Democrats. Among the few Democratic winners in State Senates races was Terry Williams, the first black man ever elected to the upper chamber of the Utah Legislature. Reapportionment was a factor in the legislative races, particularly the Senate where 11 members did not have to seek reelection becuase their districts were not significantly altered by reapporionment. They included eight Republicans and only three Democrats. One reapportioned Senate DisNo.7, which takes in the Olypmus Cove are of Salt Lake County as well as the Sugar-hous- e ined area of Salt Lake incumbent Republican K.S. Cornaby and incumbent Democrat James Reynolds. Cornaby won, 14,006 to 8,126. In a House race that drew considerable attention, write-i- n candidate Lloyd Selleneit of trict City-conta- Bountitul ueiiiix;. candidate Bill Goldberg, but he still lost to Republican Naomi Shumway. Selleneit, a veteran GOP state representative, was the prime mover behind attempts by the Legislature to censor cable TV. He lost to Shumway in a bitter Republican primary election, then decided to run as a write in. The vote was 4,031 for Shumway, 2,255 for Selleneit, 1,400 for Goldberg. Although the numbers for the Repblicans and the Democrats didn't change in the House, some familier faces will be missing when the Legislature convenes in January. Bob Sykes, a "new right" Republican who represented the Capitol Hill area of Salt Lake City, lost a close race to Democrat James Witucki. Witucki won 3,370 to 3,318. Dorthea Masur, a Weber Cutler, vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, in a rematch of their 1980 race. Kansas Democrat incumbent John Carlin defeated Republican Sam Hardage, a Wichita real estate developer, in the governor's race. Democrat Jim Slattery defeated former state GOP chairman Morris Kay for the seat held by retiring Republican Jim Jeffries. Democratic congressman Michigan James Blanchard overtook Republican Rich- ard Headlee as the evening's g progressed and won the right to succeed Gov. William Milliken. Sen. retiring GOP Donald Riegle, Jr. was over former GOP Rep. Phil Ruppe. Minnesota Former Gov. Rudy Perpich, Democrat, won his bid to regain the governorship he lost in 1978, and Republican Sen. David Durenberger won after a tough battle against millionaire Democrat Mark Dayton. GOP incumbent John Danforth Missouri won a close race over Democratic state Sen. Harriett Woods. Democrat Ike Skelton defeated Republican Wendell Bailey in a race where reapportionment placed incumbent against incumbent. Nebraska Republican Gov. Charles Thone was defeated by Democrat Bob Kerrey, a Lincoln restauranteur, despite a cam- for Thone bv President Daign Relgan. Sen.
