I V 1 YtAK By ARKADY LEOKUM Booker Taliaferro Washington was one of America's great educators. He was born on a Virginia plantation. His mother was a slave who served as cook for the master's family. After the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Abraham Lincoln in Booker's 1863 freeing the slaves, mother left the plantation and moved with her children to Maiden, W. Va. There Booker entered a school for black children. To help support the family he worked mornings in salt furnaces and coal mines before going to (1856-191- school. At the age of 17, Booker entered the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute for black students in Virginia, and studied there for three years.
